I was out cruising like i do every saturday night looking to see what cars were out. as i was coming down the main drag i saw a nice blue nova pull out. it was on a rake w/ big tires in the back it was really nice. anyway, we took off from the light going normal speed and i started to go a little faster, and that's when he floored it, and so did i. we were even the whole time which i did not understand:confused: , but it was fun.

yeah that happened to me with a duster, I wanted to see him pull but he kept half a car ahead the whole time. That thing sounded sweet, I couldn't even hear my car.

With old cars like that you never know whats under the hood. He could have a little 283 ,a big 454 or anything inbetween. Not all muscle cars are fast. The rake and the big tires might just be a cosmetic thing.

I raced my brother 81 Camaro with a 350 in it. Took him off the line instantly, and only when I needed to shift would he gain on me, then I would slowly pull away from him. In the long run it was fairly even, I might have had a bit of an edge on him.
I raced my fathers 1985 5.0 HO Mustang with a 302. My doors got blown off.
Engine size doesnt always mean anything. Simply having a new better rear end in the Mustang, a 5 speed, a short shift, and sheer weight caused it to be faster than something with a bigger engine. That little 302 hauled balls.
Technology plays a part in it also, yours is newer. So basically what im saying is if that Nova had a 350 like my brother Camaro does, then Im not surprised you were matched.

my moms 74 nova had bored 350 motor and that waz fast as hell, a auto at that

Well, unless the thing had a truck motor in it, he was probably just trying to make the "race" interesting. As far as fox mustang v. 80's camaro, the Mustang was better engineered, and was more efficient in execution of the assigned task, ergo "hauling balls". Because the mustang was lighter, didnt have a huge rubber nose, and had superior engineering in the powerplant and rearend meant that it was (and still is) the better car.
A muscle car IS fast. There may be cars from the mid 60's thru early 70's that have muscle car names, body styles, or stripes, but that does not make a true muscle car. For instance, a 68 fastback, when equipped wth the k-code 289 or hi-po 390 is a true muscle car, no doubt about it. But, take the same body, and drop a 6 banger or lesser 289 into it, and you have a good looking cruiser.
What Im trying to say with all this babbling is that all true muscle cars are fast. The trouble with folks from my generation is that they see a WRX fly by them on the freeway, and think that that is somehow "muscle". So, when they see a tired old Buick GS or something in primer with rust spots, they think that muscle cars are slow. The TRUTH is that the WRX is equipped with a power adder, and is made of plastic, whereas a true old muscle car is all-motor, 2-door, and made of pittsburgh steel. No nitrous, no forced induction. Although that definition is changing (Ford GT500), the truth is there.
I hope that made sense-I have a killer headache right now.

I think it made sence, but I would still class forced induction as muscle car. In 1964 if not the first, one of, was the Pontiac GTO it had a 389 tri power (3 2BBL carbs) and hauled ass. Pontiac noticed people buying smaller vehicles and putting larger engins in them, so they firgured they would do it for them and make it factory. They chose the smaller (which is big now days) Pontiac LeMans and made a GTO package. This started the Musclecar era, other car manufactors caught on and did the same, and in '68 sleeker bodystyles came out insted of jsut big engine in a small 2 door car.
So as for the S/c's and turbos go, as long as the car had a large displacement engine it is still a muclecar...or more a race car lol. My buddie has a '72 Dodge Dart Swinger special with a 440 running 2 4BBL's with spray and a BIG turbo... I would definatly class this as a muscle car.
But as the others said, you never really know they're old cars and they're loud, you dont know what they got, just like you dont know if they're really opening it up or just playing with ya.
Now I hope that makes sence too lol.

I dunno- like I said, I think modern muscle cars are changing the definition of what a true muscle car is. As far as the modification of muscle cars w/ power adders, I think that is then a drag car. Fast, yes. An original muscle car? No.
Just my personal definition, doesnt mean I am right, but a duster with a few add-ons and a crate motor does not stack up to the pure originality and "muscle" factor that, say, a little 65 k-code coupe does.
See, with the cougar, I still dont consider our car a "sports" car. No matter what we do, it will never be a sports car. However, it can be a track-day car- just not a factory original sports car.
I have no idea why I'm explaining this- I'm just wasting everybody's time:rolleyes:

lol I have a hobby..drinking! haha
anyways I would definatly agree with you, like I said thoes power-adders more make it a racecar, but before that it was a musclecar (if that makes sence, I donno). I'm not too sure what I would calss our car in, maby sport compact? It's not a full out sports car but according to insurance any 2 door is a sports car? i donno, I think both of us need a beer

Ha ha. My mom had a Nova too, but she rolled it a few times in a ditch way back when. She told me it hauled balls and she misses it. My dad had an old Red 67? Camaro. I forget the exact year, and here I am with a Cougar. I feel jipped. Lol.

My mother used to drag race semi-pro. She raced a 68 Shelby, a 69 GTX, and a 69 Camaro. If only she had kept those cars...

Thats the /end thread.
Some of these cars have little 2xx motors with 3 speed autos, and are slow as ****. Doesn't mean they don't look great and sound awesome though.

yes you're right. Never a sports car:rolleyes:
Look at DanG and shagmonkey as well as others.. in the 13's and 12's is faster then many production sports cars. Hell, most 3L's are faster than mustang GT's. (pre 05)

You're calling a New Edge Mercury Cougar a sports car?
Buddy. Wake up and smell the coffee. I don't care what it runs, it's not a "sports car."
A definition from Wikipedia.org (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_car)
A sports car is a type of automobile designed primarily for performance driving while not being a rally orientated car.
A car may be sporting without being a sports car. Performance modifications of regular cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, hot hatches and the like do not generally fall in the pure sports car territory, but share common sports car traits. Often, performance cars of all configurations are grouped under the general term Sports and GT cars or occasionally performance cars.
Of course, lbizboy would disagree. Ask him about his "fast" automatic cougar. ;)

So your saying that according to this definition Im driving a "Hot Hatch?" Sorry but Im not gay, and dont feel that to be ok to say.
Insurance companies consider it (Cougar) a sport compact, at least mine does (Allstate). From what My insurance company has told me, any 2 door car is considered a sports car and will raise insurance prices.
So I dunno about all that.

The insurance company said my 4cyl automatic probe was a sports car. They'll say whatever they can to make you pay more. Hell, they still have the option for the Cougar S, and I'm sure plenty of suckers out there are paying more money for their "Cougar S."
I always thought it was considered a sport compact, or a simply a 3 door hatchback. You can call it whatever you want, just expect to get laughed at when you tell other car enthusiasts you drive a sports car. It wasn't designed for performance, therefore, it's not a sports car.

Im a sports car!! Haha kidding.
Yeah, insurance companies will do that, its horrible. They considered my friends 3 cylinder Geo Metro a sports car. Good stuff, since we took that thing to 90mph and blew the head gasket and oil pump almost simoltaniously.
Lol good times in the car *sigh*

I agree, If its built for performance its a sports car, too bad the Cougar wasnt :(

Ha ha! Holy crap. I wonder what the rpm's were at. I wouldn't feel safe driving one of those little cars. I drove a Hyundai Accent I believe it was. That thing was as gay as gay can get.
