If you have firefox disable "auxillary" images

TOOLS > OPTIONS > CONTENT > Load Images , For Originating Site Only

Speeds things up a bit

Here at work I have ALL images disabled on the forums and browsing is 100x faster... im here for text not images so its def worth the 'sacrifice'

Dunno for you IE people...

Internet Explorer = Tools > Internet Options > Advanced (tab) > Scroll down to "Multimedia" heading and uncheck the "Show pictures" checkbox.

This will disable ALL images on ALL sites that you visit. HOWEVER, it does use place holders so you can right click where an image is and select "show picture" from the context menu. This way you can selectively choose which images to view. Unfortunatly, you can't "hide" and image once it's viewed without refreshing the page. The option below this one "Smart image dithering" ... turning that off will speed up IE as well IF you decide to allow images.

I wish it was more granular where you could tell it to use "xyz" setting for "abc" domain ... oh well!
