My 99 has got about 80k on it and is getting a bit of rocker noise or tappet noise . It runs and performs fine but I just wondered if this was the norm for these engines or am I looking at a big bill in the near future ?? Any info on this is much appreciated.

could be brakes

Yeah, cuz brakes always cause a tapping sound from the engine.

NoS_Cougar: did your brakes come with the optional VVT? From what i hear those do make a tapping noise from time to time

@kirby: any chance you can capture the sound on a video cellphone or the like and post for us? generally sounds are hard to debug froma verbal description... a ping to one person is a ricky-ticky-bunghole to someone else

what you can do is put a long screw driver on metal parts of the engine and put your ear on the handle (be careful of moving parts) and listen for where the tapping is coming from more specifically

if this was in the 2.5 section i could tell you in confidence it was normal b/c the 2.5 makes a ticking noise... but since you are a zetec i cant really speak to that.. hopefully a fellow zetec'r can help you more

Gawd you're a tard. It's more than likely from the mechanical lash. Usually happens at start-up until engine get to it's normal running temp. No big deal.:disgust:

It's not the 2.5.:gtfo: Lash is lash, being adjusted hydraulic or mechanical. That sir is your ticking noise.

i know its not the 2.5 hence why i stated such ;)

i however agree... unless the ticking gets louder as your rpm's climb... then thats another monster in the closet

Then why post if you are not sure???

i correlated it to common sound the 2.5 has... and gave advice as to how he can find where exactly the noise is coming from

its not like im some assklown telling him its his brakes

:goofy:

I think I just lost a few brain cells after reading this thread.

it's a fairly normal thing. just make sure u change your oil regularly. and as it was said earlier, as long as the ticking sound doesn't go faster and get louder as your rev's climb, then you are ok.

My sincere Thanks to everyone that replied. I don't think there are any monsters in my closet, from what I'm hearing it's a low idle thing so that's ok. It's nice to hear a consensus on the subject , sorta puts your mind at ease. I must say that when I initially read all the replys my mind started racing ,but I was able to put the brakes on. Thank God I'm well grounded.:naughty:

the zetec is prety noisy, it could be a few things, the Injectors are pretty loud, the cams hitting the buckets usually make some noise, it COULD even be a small exhaust leak

check your cam to tappet clearance with a feeler gauge. If its way out you may hev something wrong with a retainer or what not.
