After doing some searches I believe my sycro is going. 99 v6 mtx
Problem: When I shift into third with it grinds (unless there is no load on it).
Tried: I change my tranny fluid today and it still has the same problem.
Previous info: Ford replaced my tranny @48K and my car has 71K.
Questions:
1. Is this the problem?
2. Should this be covered under the replacement eventhough my warrentee expired @50k?
3. About how much should I expect to change all syncors from a shop? (just looking in general...I will eventually call local shops)
4. Should I also change the clutch (don't think ford did this @50k) how much more would it cost?
5. Should I just keep driving until the tranny goes (using third as minimal as possible)?
Thanks in advance.
Brian
ps. great to see the boards up again...thanks to those who make them possible.
1) probably
2) are you asking if ford should fix it for free even though the warranty is long since expired? the answer is no.
3) lots. $500-800ish labor to remove the tranny, hundreds more for parts and labor to repair the tranny
4) Yes. $300 ish for new stock SVT clutch and slave cylinder
5) no unless you want your repair bill to get even more expensive.

1. thanks thats what I read, but I am no mechanic
2. figured that but thought they might have some extended warentee on a replacement.
3. SH@@ that is what I figured, but was wondering how much total for everything
4. I no nothing about clutches. That being said how much is a OEM replacement and what advantages will the SVT give me.
5. how much to replace the entire tranny?
New question...is the cost really worth it...at best it looks like the car is worth only about 5K at best.

IIRC, the tranny itself may have its own warranty. Not really certain though. Call the dealer and ask.
The 2nd-3rd syncro is know for going bad. Just be gentle after you get it fixed. ;)
1. No.
2. No.
3. A shop will usually charge arouned $700-$1000 for R&R labor, the rebuild will be between $400-$600, plus parts. $2k is easily reachable for the whole job. Believe it!
4. 71k is borderline. Go with an SVT or SPEC Stage 1 clutch if you go for it.
There is no 2-3 synchro. You have the 1-2 syncho, the 3-4 synchro, and the 5-R syncho. It's the 3-4 syncho that's weak.
At any rate, it's more likely that your blocker rings have worn due to the weak syncho- So you're not only looking at synchos but blocker rings too- Plus new bearings at each side of the main and countershaft.

around how much is each clutch and where is the best place to get them?
Also, this seems to be a pretty common problem (for trannys when they have it), so do they sell a kit w/ all the stuff mentioned above (a rebuild kit or something)? if so, about how much should I expect it to cost?
Lastly, I work at a High School. We have automechanics as a class. Is this something that is more time and tools and less technical where students under guidance would be ok (labor would be free) or should I not risk it?
I understand that it is all depending, I am just asking because I have no tranny experience. I would try it myself w/ some help from some friends, but I don't have a lift.
Also once again, thank you everyone for your help.
Bill J. can get you all the parts shipped to your door. It would be all blocker rings, the 3-4 synchro, the new cone for the synchro replacement, all four bearings (main & counter shaft), and new axle seals (2).
The clutch kit from SPEC includes a new slave cylinder- These are probably the most common aftermarket clutch for these cars. The SVT clutch probably does NOT include a slave cylinder, but you can ask Bill. He can also get the SVT clutch, and would have the best price.

As far as using a high school shop... Your call. Why not use the free labor if it's available?

or u can go with the HMS slick shift forks and upgrade the entire tranny while it is apart with the focus shift tower and forks. the gears are going to be hard as hell to strip , i would replace all of the inner and outer blockers also and do a complete rebuilt of it all. i had the same problem with my tranny. since i was keeping the car and planning on building up the motor , i thought i would build the tranny up so it was done.
here is a copy of my tranny build from terry
