View Full Version : HELP Please fixing shifter install :(

I installed (or attempted to) my short shifter tonight but it's not able to move side to side. The brass plate on the right side that should move up and down as the shifter is moved from side to side is not moving. :banghead: but does go up/down (as in 3rd to 4th gear).

I've taken the clippy thing back off the pivot pin and tried it with the shifter un-attached, and the brass plate going to the cable still does not want to move, but it feels like the cable itself is movable.

Any suggestions on what to look for or what's not right?

thanks :(

did you follow the B&M install guide? I think when you put it back together you have too have the shifter off too 1 side or something! and also if you did do it right have you actually tried putting the whole shifter assembly back together because I think I ran into a simular problem (or so I thought) and it wasn;t moving and then when I put it all back together it was fine, I think it was because I didn;t have that black top plate on that it was screwing up because I believe it was after that went back on it worked fine! you still have my cell number so if you can;t figure it out soon give me a call and you can explain it a bit better as words are confusing sometimes as too what the problem is for me! Hope I helped or can help!

yeah, I jsut went out and dug into mine, as promised. I had it to the point where i would be taking the shifter out. For one moment that plate seemed to lock up on me, but that was a very short moment. I would just slide it to the right, wiggle it a bit, reassemble everything - totally - and go drive the car.

I think there are two things here: 1. the plate may be slightly in the wrong spot and needs reseated, and 2. it is designed to be operated assembled, not partially assembled.

george: you and your "operate it fully assembled" rules ;)
Ty: the shifter itself isnt hanging up - so dont think trying out the stock one will be any different.
Cody: did have it 90% together when I noticed it. All but the bottom cable back on. Top plate was on and retainer clip and whatever else.
all: going to try to take it back apart and play with that brass plate and see if it's just not quite in the right place.

I know on mine the spring on the gold piece popped out of place. There should be one on each side of the gold thing on the side of the shift tower.

Hey Goldie. Did you end up getting the Fidanza short shifter? If so, whats included with it and how do you like it? Does it seem to be a good quality product? I really want one of those shifters, but no one has one. :(

yeah - have the fidanza. It seems identical to the B&M except you don't get the repalcement plastic clip - so you need to make sure not to destroy the original one. Like the B&M, the shaft and ball joints are stainless and the reverse lock-out is alumn. It does include the rest of the hardware (o-rings and roll pin). It doesn't include a shift knob, but I think B&M also stopped including that too. It also doesn't include any instructions - so the ones from B&M were very handy. I'll post some pix up sometime soon - but it looks just the same as the B&Ms I've seen.
