Greetings all...
I just got myself a black 2001 Cougar V6 MTX, to replace my dead '95 Cougar 4-door (more commonly known as a Mystique :) ).

So, since I have this '95 Mystique V6 ATX with a dead trans, what should I grab off of it before I send it to the Great Highway in the Sky? (Bearing in mind, of course, that I don't plan on keeping, say, a whole spare engine. Also, I'm not presently planning to part it out, so no parts requests please!)

I have no clue what you can pull off it to make the cougar better. What type of V6 is it? I think Mystique's came with the 2.0 i4 or the Duratec V6, if in some chance that is a 3.0litre v6 put it in your cougar.

Welcome to NECO

Welcome from Motor Cities and Ontario Neco  check us out, I think there's a mod meet coming up in August!

The 95 Duratec V6 is in almost EVERY WAY inferior to your new one. Save the alternator and IACV. I think those didn't even have an IMRC, and the DPFE is different.

Welcome aboard, though. Enjoy!

Thanks, LadyX! I've got a pretty packed August, but I'll see if I can make it!

B3NN3TT, are there other differences of which you're aware aside from things related to the EEC-IV vs EEC-V change?

And, in at least two ways, the old one was superior. For one, I have an OBD-I code scanner, and for another, it has half the chance of O2 sensor failure! (Only two O2 sensors. :) )

What brake parts are common between the cars? I believe the front brakes are different, but the rears are the same? (If so, that'd be really useful, since I put new pads, rotors, and calipers on the Mystique just before the trans went... :flushed:

2001 Cougar only has 2 O2 sensors, and 1 catalyst efficiency sensor.

The cat efficiency sensor in the 01/02 Cougar is near the main cat.

It was the 99/00 Cougar that had 4 sensors.

The 95 Duratec 2.5L has a vacuum operated IMRC, instead of electronic, IIRC.

Uhm.

There were block changes between the 95 and the 01- the 01/02 has the extra feed and drains that the 3L motor has (Interesting note when doing a 3L Hybrid swap in a 01/02 Cougar- you don't need to fill and plug anything in the block).

I'd offer up more trivia, if you want. :)

NorCalCoug: I love trivia! I'm interested in hearing anything you'd care to share.

I'm pleased to hear that they went back to two O2 sensors. I suppose I should get a newer copy of my Contour/Mystique/Cougar shop manual so I get the correct wiring diagrams. (The one I have only goes to '00.)

Also, OBD-II > OBD-II.

Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to NECO!

I believe the only real good use for the 2.5 from the Mystake would be pulling the engine and just use it for experience in tearing down and putting together engines. Use it for practice so you know what you're doing when you get ready to tear down a 3L.

All my tearing-down of engines goes into my TurboFords. My Cougar's supposed to be the car that gets me to work every day, so it'll stay stock. Really. Well, almost stock. I mean that. Mostly. ;)

It does sound like, other than a few little things, I'll probably just get rid of the Mystique whole. Oh well, at least I might get a little more for it that way. Thanks for the advice, everybody!
