1st line up all the wires from stereo harness to the harness that you bought for the car ( the grey and black clips)....Keep in mind that all but maybe 1 or 2 wires should be matched up color for color. If you have trouple read the manual to the player and match it to what it says on the grey and black harness(they usually tell you what the function is in small print on each wire.
2. grey clip and a black clip dont look exactly like the shape of the car's end of the hardness, but just line up the tab at the top on each one and it should click into place.
and you should have a euro style antenna adapter if im not mistaken, in any case just connect the ant and you should be done if you need more assistand pm me and ill pull mine and take photo's tomorrow if you need them
I hope this helps

that harness that came with it ... you connect the wires from it to the wires on the cd player. you then connect, clip to clip. do the same for the other harness (the speakers), i believe they're a bunch of a purple wires. then you use that antenna connector, and connect your antenna. this isn't brain science dude, and there is no reason for you to have to know the stock wire diagram. if anything, you'd want to know the diagram off what ever receiever you have, and it will tell you everything in the manual.

http://www.the12-volt.com if you HAVE to have the wire colors. That generally leads to effin some things up when you do it that way. Just take the harness adapter and antenna lead (one for a Volkswagen)-(you will need to buy these if you dont have them with the snap in kit), and match color to color to the one that came in the box with your NEW stereo. Use solder and shrink tube to make a clean install.

1st off-Do the connectors match? The harness you bought..Does it connect correctly to the stock harness. If no you have4 the wrong harness. There are 2 possibilities IIRC.
2nd- As said earlier. Match the colors of the new harness to the wires of the the new cd player and connect them as recommended above. The harness should then snap together easily with the stock harness.

I'm not sure if this will help, but I think the guy before me may have said the same thing I'm about to say. I recently bought a Pioneer head unit and when I bought the wiring harness, it was completely different than what would fit the stock wiring. I went back to Circuit City where I bought it and had the guy take a look at it, and all it turned out to be was there's a different wiring harness for the Cougar than most other Ford/Mazdas that Metra makes harnesses for. The packaging that came with the harness I bought said it would fit my car, but apparently there's two different connectors. Maybe that's your problem? Hope this helps.

I just recently got a Pioneer deck, everything matched up fine with mine. Colors and all. The wiring harness that they gave me is a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury/Mazda 1986-2004 Metra wiring harness. If this is what you have then all wires should match up to the same color with just a slight shade differece. And the little clip on the back of the stock radio, I ended up not using and it still works fine.

Okay if you have a 99-00 then chances are you have 3 possibly 4 plugs on the back of your radio. If you have a cd changer you will have 4. the only two connectors you are worried about are the two long flat plugs.
If you own a 01-02 then you will have two plugs. The only one you are concerned with is the one with all the wires filled in, the other plug is not used it has only one wire. when buying a arness for this car you need the big square (later stlye plug) for 2001-2004 fords.
Oh and BTW buy a volkswagen antenna adapter.

if your using a Metra harness you would be using the 70-1770 and the 40vw10 antenna adaptor
ALL you have to do is match the colors of your AfterMarket harness (70-1770) to your Radio's harness. Then clip it into the factory plug.
If you lazy then go to circuit city and buy the smart harnesses. They sell one for your car (80-1770) and one for your pioneer (PR0180). They will clip together in the center making your wiring job take about 2 seconds. They will run you $40 for the two. Definitly worth it if you are unfamilar or just lazy lol.

I know this is an extremely old thread, but I REAAAALLY need help. I am having the same problem the guy who started the thread is. I bought an aftermarket stereo. its a pioneer 5000bh or something. The wire COLORS on my PIONEER do not match up AT ALL with the colors on my ORIGINAL HARNESS. I think the reason for a helpful answer to this was lack of clarity. I need a wiring diagram for a 2000 cougar. I don't want another harness, or e-z adapter or anything. I just need to know what wire represents what. i/e black/orange=12v acc. probably not the right combonation, but you get the idea :P so yeah, again I really just need a wiring diagram for the cougar, and it ceases to exist anywhere on the internetzz. I really appreciate it.. thanks!

When I installed the deck in my gfs car, I bought the harness for her car and soldered the decks included harness to it. All the wires were labelled, both on the decks harness and the cars harness. Color was irrelevant because the harnesses were different colours in my case. But each wire had had a label printed on the wire, and I just matched them up.
At first I was a little confused, since when I bought the harness I was under the impression that it would plug into the deck and the car and that's that. When I opened it I discovered that I'd actually have to make the harness using the connector from the headunit and the harness kit I bought.
Really, if your doing this without the harness kit, your just being rediculous. It's like $12, and then your not hacking up your stock wiring harness. Heck, I bought it for my carputer, and i'm only utilizing 1/4 of the wires on it, the others are capped off.

Car Alarm, Car Stereo, Mobile Video, and Cruise Control Info for Installers (http://www.the12volt.com) should have the wiring configuration on their site.
But thats a moot point. The harness is your easiest way of doing this. Stated over and over again the stock wiring is not going to matchup with the harness wiring. If that were the case you could just cut and splice with ease and no headache. But thats no the case. match up your harness connectors to the stock connectors. If they connect they are fine. Wiring goes like this:
New deck>>>Wiring harness>>>Stock harness
Match the wires from the deck to the harness. Not harness to harness.
There is also the possibility of a 3rd plug. Thats the speed volume sensor. When you speed up your car it would raise the volume of your stock radio. That little connector is not used if applicable.

damn people this is not rocket science.... If you really want to know what the wire colors are then why dont you get out your mulitmeter and test each wire... the people on the boards are just trying to help you out...
And I dont know how much I trust the 12volt.com or what ever for a 2000 cougar they have 6" listed as the speaker sizes for the front...
