I found this in the euro Ford TIS manual.
TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN No.73/1999
Car and Light/Medium Commercial 22.07.1999
Section: 32 (417-01)
Model: Cougar
Markets: All
Subject: Temporary headlamp conversion for driving on the left/right
Summary
In order not to dazzle oncoming traffic, the headlamps should be removed according to Operation No 32 115 0 (Workshop Manual/TIS-CD) and converted for driving on the left/right.
Service Instructions
See Summary.
1. Remove the headlamp according to Operation Number 32 115 0 (Workshop Manual/TIS-CD).
Note:
Do not touch the glass of the bulb with the fingers.
2. Remove the headlamp bulb.
Note:
In its base setting the lever will always be upright. Move the lever to the right on RHD vehicles, to the left on LHD vehicles.
µ 3. Make the temporary change to the headlamp direction, e.g. for RHD vehicles driving on the right, by moving the lever to the right (RHD vehicle shown).
1 Move the lever from its vertical position to the right until it reaches the stop.
2 When the lever is moved, the headlamp glass will be seen to turn when observed through the bulb aperture.
4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 for the other headlamp.
5. When a LHD vehicle is temporarily modified for driving on the left, the same procedure applies, except that the lever is moved to the left.
6. Install the components in reverse order.
7. Check the headlamp alignment and if necessary adjust it according to Operation No. 32 113 0 (Workshop Manual/TIS-CD).

Nice find. You wouldn't be able to post 7. Check the headlamp alignment and if necessary adjust it according to Operation No. 32 113 0 (Workshop Manual/TIS-CD). would you? My headlamps were screwed up when I got the car and I've never been able to get them right again.

I could post that info, but I wont. Ford dealerships have "special" equipment and that is all that the section referrs to.

Oh, so it's not something you can do accurately yourself?
Drewmanfu0
07-04-2006, 10:47 PM
yeah you can do it, just park infront of a garage and tape a level line out on the garage and then two cross lines about the width of the car apart and turn the adjusting screws with an allen wrench to get them even.

Hmm, that's going to be a problem for me. I live in an apartment complex, and my parent's garage has a crazy driveway that goes down at a 35+ degree angle right after the garage door. Plus, how do you know if you're getting the angle right?

Anything flat and level will serve the purpose of aiming your headlights. A wall at a store would work. also there are those bubble levelersin the headlight they will get them in very close to where they need to be. Hope this helps.

Well, my problem is horizontal not vertical aim. Whoever had the car before me really effed it up. The vertical is amazingly easy to fix but I can't seem to get the horizontal quite right, I don't really want to mess with it too much either b/c the person who had it before me also basically stripped out the adjustment thing (whatever its called where you stick the allen wrench in).

Oh I see. you could remove the headlight and carefully notch that adjuster, then use some household oil to lube the gears up to make it easier. Good luck.

What did you guys do about the turn signal part of these lights? I have a customer that got some and he is trying to pass inspection.

his best bet would to be to remove them for inspection and then reinstall them afterwards. the other option would to be to put an orange bulb in the turn signal... legally that should meet the US DOT requirements

I think the guy installing them is a bozo. I just looked at the lamps and there is an orange marker light in there with a standard socket. I will know more tomorrow.

Bill, you have to cut the US-spec turn signal socket to fit in the European hole. With the European socket and bulb, the light will light up, but will not blink, hince why you must modify the stock US socket. Its a very easy mod. Involves trimming the tabs to the same as on the European socket. There are a few threads with pictures out there that will show you how, I'll try to find them for you.

Oooo, your in luck, I still have it bookmarked from when I did mine last year. The thread is from 2002, so some of the pictures probably do not work, but the how-to is still there. Your Welcome. (http://newcougar.org/forums/showthread.php?t=468&highlight=euro);) Let me know if that helps.

Cut and splice, I had to add a wire into the headlamp plug to feed the parking spotlamps. I used the sidemarker plug to operate the turnsignal and changed the small bulb in the light to amber to keep up to DOT standards.

Thread bump, do you have a pic of what the TSB is referring to?

Pop the back off of the lamp, remove the bulb. If there is a notch in the lowbeam cutoff shield there will be a lever on the bottom of the projector. That will make the cutoff at the horizon instead of blinding oncoming traffic.

Thanks! I'll look into this.
Edit: I found the levers. It makes sense. Now to just wait for nightfall and see how the headlights perform.
I'm actually quite pleased with these headlights. With a PIAA Extreme white H7 bulbs, you can probably get near HID-like performance.

Okay I adjusted the headlights the other way. It seems to me that just adjusting the driver's side is good enough and to leave the passenger side alone and reaim from there. Anyone else can shed some light on this?

Remove one of the projectors off your old lamps and install on the new lamp. There should be 4 torx screws holding the projector in.

Those torx screws have a special pin in them, so be sure to get the right bit.
