View Full Version : SPL Test 'n Tune

Well, yet again I will be bringing the SPL meter setup to Fest with me. So, this is the best time for those who want professional tuning on their systems to get it taken care of. Using the mic (and an ear that's been doing it for 16 years) I can tune the hell out of any system for the best possible sound and SPl scores.
As an example... Yesterday the kids and I were bored, so I used the setup to tune my BONE STOCK Neon rental car's stereo. With just basic factory controls and a lot of testing and tuning I ended up with 131.1 dB -- which beats over 1/2 of the people I tested last year at Fest. All with a stock stereo. And it gets even better when I have a radio with real controls and a good amp to play with the gains and any crossovers.
The testing went well last year, with me doing something like 30 cars in a few hours. Last year we had only a few people sign up prior to the event, but once they say it going everyone wanted in on it. I'd like to have pre-signup go a little better this year. Don't worry about "winning" -- this is all about seeing where you stand with your current setup, and taking advice about how to better take it to the next level (if you so wish).
For those that want to go very big, I can also test the resonance of your car, and determine the best frequency box to have built for the best sound. I will only do this for die-hards, tho, since this is a process that takes about an hour per car to complete.
Reply here and let me know if you'd be interested in any of these. The SPL will be held in the parking lot of the hotel once again -- and we drew quite the crowd last year, so be prepared. (I will be bringing hearing protection, but if anyone else can also bring some that'd be great!)

I would love for someone to look over my system [as pathetic as it is].
also are you willing to do the exhaust SPL again?

Don't do anything that'll getcha in trouble. But if they don't mind, that'd rock.

Yeah, I've been trying to figure out a better way to test that, since its pressure based, not "loudness". But I'm game, none-the-less. :P
And yeah Matt, I want to get my hands on yer system. We'll spend some time on getting it perfect, before you rip it all out. LOL

I'm actually thinking I might hang onto it for a while longer ;)
the 3.0 seems far off in the distance, so i'll AT LEAST have the audio for the rest of the year :)
It certainly could use some professional tuning - just don't make the :ugh: face! I know its not competition quality stuff! heh!
from the stuff you said about your rental neon, are you saying you can adjust a stock stereo to sound better? cuz if you can, i would have you do that on my mustang.

I'm in, though my setup will be on the small-ball (keep your jokes to yourself kiddies ) side, just an Infinity Basslink and four cabin speakers with an amp.

Yes, I have the full TermLab setup that I used while I was an USAC/IASCA judge/event coordinator.

Yup... =) Like I said, I was able to beat 1/2 the SPL scores from last years Fest with the stock Neon stereo and a little bit of tuning using the TermLab. ;)

Sure can, and I will bring my test CD for that as well, since you reminded me.
I will have to call down to the shop this week and get the software unlock key for the scope, however, since I didn't use it last year. That will give me full range tuning (20 - 20K). If I can get the 2nd mic in time I can even do sound stage analysis. Also, since you're doing SQ, we might want find the ambient frequency of your car -- do you have the interior back in, or is it still empty? =) We could have fun with the SQ stuff all week, lol...
Madgeo, we had some impressive showings last year, but I don't think byrd or nutty are coming w/ their cars. Not sure if anyone else has gotten anything new tho. ;)

Yes there was. ;) I will post last years scores again when I get home, if I have a chance.
There's more ppl with large systems than you'd think. I still have my 2 12" Orion HCCA's, each with a 1200watt amp running 1ohm. I won many competitions with that setup, even when I was forced out of the Amateur category.
Not sure who will be showing up with new stuff this year, but you'd be surprised.

I do indeed have my interior back in.
It has alot of reflective surfaces though. Such as the CF headliner, CF door panels, etc.
I have kicker digitial amps, 2 pairs of components, 8" midbass, and full time correction ability for each of the channels.
