hi i have a 99 cougar and ive been having coolant leaking and burning smell going on for a while now. i was refiilling the coland every 3weeks, but u can smell that im burning it. so i finally had it looked at and they told me my heads gasket is leaking, my tensiors pullies are shot and its going to be about 1500-2200 to fix it. i was wondering if anyone knows or other places to bring it to, or does that sound right on how much it would cost. i live in e-town

Well removing the heads from engine will its still in the car is hard and takes time. It is always a good idea to call at least 2 shops for estimates. Good Luck.

V6?
Ahh...if you have a blown headgasket, that pretty much a full tear down of the engine to replace it. If it's the rear head, I imagine the engine will have to be pulled. Most of that money is probably for labor.
You could probably put in a 3 liter for 2200, but if you aren't mechanically inclined, I wouldn't recommend it.
The best thing to do would be to call around and start asking prices about replacing the head gaskets on a 1999 Cougar.
Orrrrrr....I'll give you 500 for the whole car

Good for you!
After it's fixed and you're sure that's the only thing that was wrong, I'd be rubbing it that other shop's face :)

Theres only a timing BELT on the I4, which i hope you have. If its a V6 they are timing chains, they meaning two, one for each head.....
