View Full Version : Wanna tear apart an engine?

I've got a spare 2.5L motor that had a blown head gasket (from a 95 mystake) that I would like to offer to one of my fellow SoCalers.

"Why would I want this lump of engine?" you ask.

Well I'll tell you.

I've found that the best way to learn how to work on these motors is to actually get down and dirty with one, and take it apart. So if you are planning to build a 3.0L anytime soon, or just want to learn the inner workings of the Duratecs, don't risk breaking your own, buy a spare. And here is your opportunity to do so. Cheaply.

You're probably saying to yourself, "Thats all fine and good Devin, but what do you want for this glorious hunk of history?"

$500?

Pfffft. Who do you think I am, CustomCougars?

$250?

No way. Go lower.

$100

Nope.

Here's what I'm gonna do. Just because I like your face, for today and today only, you can have this masterpiece of automotive technology for 10 easy payments of $2.

I don't know what I'm thinking, I'm practically giving this thing away .

And if you order within the next 20 minutes, I'll deliver it TO you anywhere in the Greater Orange County Area. (extra delivery fees (pizza) apply for anyone further away).

Operators are standing by, so don't miss out on this opportunity to tear something apart. Cheaply.

LTNS guys, yeah, I've been busy.

If I had the space I'd jump all over it. But I'm already trying to get rid of an engine as it is.

Cool! Too bad I've already torn two of these apart :(

you can't just take 20 upfront?

Honeslty, I'd take it but I have nowhere to keep it.

For you, I'd take the 20 up front ;)

It actually doesn't take up too much space in the garage... I've got it under a table right now... I'll try and get a picture of it later for you :)

Damn I feel special. My garage is nothing but storage space though, it's a two car garage and we can't fit one in.

Sounds like my Mom's house.

Where the engine is currently stored.

So you've got room ;)

I'd hate to see how much pizza it would take for him to deliver it to me here in Phoenix.

Seriously, I've got all the room in the world, I just would have to figure out how to get it here. If you have any other reason for coming to Phoenix, I wouldn't mind taking it off your hands.

Bobby, NO! :goofy: Nobody goes out of their way to come out here dude, and I don't blame them

It would take exactly 25.78 Pizzas to get me to come out there Bobby,(Delivery, not Digiorno).

But, I'm not too keen on driving to a place where it is hot enough to cook the pizzas outside. At night.

Ok let's talk hypothetically here. Let's say that the people who own the residence I live in (my parents) allow me to keep an broken motor in the garage. I can pay you the FULL 20. How could we get it to SD? would I need an engine jack? I dont have an engine jack.

Hypothetically speaking... I would drive it down to you next weekend.

And then Hypothetically we would take it out of the back of my car, and put it wherever you want. Two people can lift these motors without too much trouble. Hypothetically of course.

And I'll even let you pay me a full $50 since you're so keen on paying me money ;)

I don't know that it'd be worth it...

But if things fall through with Drew, I'll get you a quote :)

This engine is completely useless for anything other than learning about the motor. It had 106K Miles on it when it blew. Then, once it was replaced, it sat outside for a year accumulating gunk on it. Then I bought the Mystique it came from, and got it in the deal.

So I have no idea how it was driven or abused.

I don't think any amount of work would get it to the point where it would be something you'd want to put in a car.

Unless you've got a lot of time to kill.

i see....nevermind then...i was thinking of getting new timing parts, crankshaft seals and all the other stuff...but guess not....thanks anyways

DEVIOUSDEV
06-26-2006, 11:13 PM
Here are pics of the beast.

Its actually missing one of the heads, and timing cover (both apparently got taken when the mystique was hauled off :( ). But I've got the LIM and UIM.

Anyway, you can see why it is useless except:
1) To take apart.
2) To see how the mechanical stuff works.
3) To keep yourself from worrying about screwing up YOUR engine while learning.
4) To hold large quantities of paper down during a tornado.

I guess I wasn't as clear about its condition as I thought in the first post. Hopefully these pictures clear it up a bit :)

If Drew doesn't want it. Then yes :)

Otherwise you can make him an offer for it. Maybe he could recoup his cost on the motor ;)

Well la-de dah, I was taking it for the amount you asked for.

I have a burned valve, can i get a replacement part off your block or something? I'll trade you a pizza... or maybe a burrito.

DEVIOUSDEV
07-03-2006, 02:35 PM
I would rather you take it, and learn from it, than be paid more money for it to get melted down ;)

And the valves on this thing would be useless... not to mention a royal pain in the ass to get off.

Eh, i'm not sure if my problem is a leak in the exhaust gasket or a burned valve anyway.
