Don't let it get you down man. Cars break, it's inevitable. If you really love the car I say fix it. I mean a 3L swap will run you about $1000 or so. Thats not to bad considering the price of getting another car.

I agree. I went through two cougars, with those I had 3 blown transmissions. two blown engines. a starter.two steering racks....and probably a few more things that slip my mind. I still managed to drive them for t total years. Keep it

The swap itself is pretty straight forward. If you want to use the split port manifold you have to do some work on the heads. A straight 3L swap would require you to get the fuel line brazed and an egr tube fab'd. Then you would need a chip to get it all running smoothly. Most 3L's come with #24 injectors and the stock ecu can't compensate for that kind of an increase. Also if you did the straight swap you would need to rig the IMRC to trick the ecu into thinking that it still works and have it shut off by the chip.
It's really up to you, a swap is going to run you somewhere in the neighborhood of $1000. The most dependent thing is going to be the price of the motor, around here they range around 650. Where as that 2.5 that guy is selling is $375. If money isn't a factor then I'd say go with the 3L and use the split port.
Ask 99cougarny, he said he knows a guy that owns a junk yard.

first, a full 3L or a hybrid would more or less require a chip .. i know someone who dropped a full 3 in with no chip, and it ran a little rich but he got around till he got one ... second, how hard could it be to have the egr tube fabbed? and the fuel rails, ask blackcoog he had dropped many of 3L's in and could probably walk u on how to do em ... he fabbs his own rails when he does the swaps...
as far as an escape engine goes ... it all depends on what u want as far as miles and years go. an 01 with 30k on it, might be hard to find. if you wanted an 01 with less than 60k or less than 75k then i'm sure it could be found ... junkyard parts are worthless until they have a buyer, my girlfriends brother said he scrapped a cougar a few months ago with a ****load of parts on it because htey didn't sell for a year or so ... i would of loved to have known i would of parted it on here. point being, more patience and less preferences the cheaper it'll get.

If you run #19 injectors the stock ecu can adapt to them, however to get the most out of the swap you should get a chip. Your existing superchip will only work if you have it sent to be reburned. The EGR tube isn't the hard part. Getting someone to properly braze a fuel rail is. I have read too many threads about fuel rails starting to leak. It is just my personal preference since I would rather have the piece of mind knowing that it won't be a problem. My other reason is that it's in your best interest to open up the motor anyway to make sure everything is good...so while it's apart you can take the heads to a welder to get the ports filled with aluminum and then port match the heads to the split port manifold. You also get that stock look . Another suggestion would be to go with Clevite 77 bearings.
That my personal preference though....it's really up to you.

I'm not talking about porting and polishing the heads. I think your getting it confused. The injector for the tumble port 3L heads is positioned in the middle of the port, in the split port the injector is in the primary runner. If you want to use the 2.5L LIM and UIM you have to move the injector slot. You can do it yourself but you need someone to weld aluminum into the injector slot this should cost around $100. Then using the split port LIM gaskets you can very easily port the injector slot. DemonSVT has pictures on his website if you want to review it.
