I dont wanna pull the engine apart and replace the lifters :(
It has almost 3k miles on the current oil which was pennzoil
Im going to put some good oil in, my dad suggested some 10w-40 for the summer. Its going to be motorcraft.
IM going to run some injector cleaner through it, and some high octane gas. My friend also suggested seafoam?
I hope this would clear it up, ive just been having too much fun with this car, especially after I put the exhaust on.
Any other ideas? I dont wanna kill my cat!

explain the sound of the ticking and how it ticks with engine speed. you might get better help that way. just a sugestion

I have only noticed it when it idles, which from the diagnostic mode is around 700-760rpm.
It ticks prolly about 2-4 times per second, so it sounds like when a certain cylinder hits it is ticking.

probably just an injector. not possative though. run some injuector cleaner though the motor. if it still ticks after that. then hey..at least you will have cleaner injectors. lol

You're good on oil, not low? That could cause the HLA's to "tick". Try upping the gas from 87 to 89, or possibly 91+ and see if that solves the problem.
If you want a good oil, go with Mobil 1.

When you do the oil, go 5W-20 or 5W-30. Don't go to 40 ,that's going to be too thick for the Duratec.

I hate doing it, but I added a half quart of Motorcraft 5w-20 (from my old ranger) and it seems to be gone. That was only on the drive to work though. Hopefully that is the problem, my brother warned me of Pennzoil....

good GOD 10w40 that's what I run in my 78 F-250
you should be running a Synthetic 5w-20 or 30 like Linkman
said!
10w-30 should be good enough. Thats what I ran in my kitty when I had her.
10w-40 + warm weather coming up... isnt that just asking for trouble?

Yeah, I was kinda confused with his decision oil too. I would think a lower weight would be better for such a small engine. Obvoisly you guys do to.

Yea, i've been running 5w-30 full syn since the beginning. I finally found 5w-20 just my last oil change, which my car recommends, so I use that now.

I used 5w-20 in my Ranger all the time. Its not hard to find, at least it wasnt for me. I used Motorcraft though.

Our cars aren't tuned for high octane gas...You're probably better off sticking with 87.
Make sure you run 6 quarts of oil too...not the 5 that it calls for.

I run 6 because I have an oil cooler but why would
anyone else run 6qt Wade? The car already runs 100+psi
at start up that sounds like trouble with too much oil in it
at that psi. Just wondering because I saw Ken talking about this
too but I only add about 5.5 on all my oil changes since my cooler
still holds about .75qt.

Just what I've read from the DanGs of the forum....it will help prevent spun bearings due to the lack of the oil return line on the rear head, and the non-baffled oil pan.

Wow, 6qt's.
How many others recommend this? Its not really a horrible idea, mine burns oil anyways.

I always run 6qts semi-synthetic in mine, havent had any issues yet. I usually get Valvoline.

The stock fill is 5.8 quarts according to the manual, so using 6 qt isn't much extra. I put in 6 qt.
I think the lack of an oil return is an overblown danger  The extra half-quart is to keep a little more in the oil pan to help make up for the lack of baffles under spirited right hand (?) curves.

Your manual says 5.8?? I'm sure mine says 5...
Supposedly those two things together are what starves the oil pump and causes spun bearings, especially on hard right hand turns.

Yeah mine says 5 I'm pretty sure. I stick with what I always use.

Capacities...
Engine oil - with filter: 2.0l = 4.25l (4.5 qts) 2.5l = 5.5l (5.8 qts)
I would have scanned it if I could find a scanner.

Same here. A little viscous insurance...

Don't confuse liters and quarts. It's 5.0 liters without filter, 5.5 liters with filter - which translates to 5.3 qt and 5.8 qt respectively. Same for both the '99 and '01 Duratecs, at least according to the PDF owners manual found here...

*edit* Well, I guess the '00 manual as well, thanks Anthony, I skimmed right over that. */edit*

I'm not too sure what the reasoning behind listing it in liters was. I'm not sure about you but I haven't seen motor oil for sale by the liter anywhere, only by the quart.

Yeah, I just checked my manual, if definately says 5.8 quarts. There's issue one right there, when I changed my oil 2,500 miles ago I only put in 5.
My bad!

5.8 quarts. I used to put just that in it everytime as well, but read about putting in 6. So now I just say screw it and dump the whole thing in. 5w-20 Full Syn is a bit tricky to find back home in the middle of nowhere. It may be easier to pick up in Columbus, guess I could've done that.
Ouch! Only 5 quarts. No wonder man!

Yeah I know, right? My 03 Ranger with a 3.0Litre took onlt 5 quarts, I figured this thing would too. I guess I shoulda checked the manual.
I would imagine this would fix the problem, since I added oil It seems to be gone.
5w-20 it is.

See there was your problem. Never assume anything about this car is normal :)

I've used 6qts of 5w-30 Valvo. Synpower since I've had the car, Now that its summer I may try 5w-20 and see how that goes. Then when fall comes, switch back to 30 weight.
