With the closed diff or the open diff? The open differential has some weird thing where the speedo gear is supposed to be ... I don't know what your trying to get at though

Well, my differential has a "trigger wheel" instead of the "speedo gear", and I already pressed the bearing onto my LSD.
So, I had to press the differential carriage bearing back off the LSD and ended up ruining it in the process. Now I have to buy another diff bearing and buy a "trigger wheel". (Since I broke that too)
I didn't know this trigger wheel existed. Never heard about it on NECO or CEG or Ford CD.

Any bearing you pull off a diff is junk new or not since they are one time install for the most part. Trigger wheel.....interesting

A trigger wheel with a magnetic pickup sensor would be much more reliable of a speed sensor than the old gear type ... plastic breaks too easily. Not to mention, there is no frictional loss with this type of sensor. Now the big question ... what year/make/model car did it come off? Newer 2.3L Duratec MTX-75?

OK, why didn't you just leave the LSD alone. I hope you weren't installing the open diff into your car

I pressed the speedo gear and differential carriage bearings on the LSD before hand thinking I had a speedo gear instead of the trigger wheel, which I have never heard of.
So, the reason I did not "leave the LSD alone" is because I had to remove the speedo gear and bearing in order to put the trigger wheel on the LSD.
Its a '99 2.0L Cougar, 5/98 build.

BTW you are still going to have to check preload on the diff bearings, but it seems like you did not press the bearing on all the way in that pic. It can go a little more. Chances are if you press both bearings all the way down the preload will be perfect with the original bearing races. Look at your original diff, the bearing sits slightly lower.
Good luck.

I made sure the bearing was pressed on all the way the second time. I am going to be checking preload on the bearings. I bought the shims and understand how to check it.

Depends on what kind of VSS your car uses. The normal VSS is a gear-driven affair. The trigger wheel will need the appropriate VSS unit, which your ECU might not be programmed for...
I'd stick with what I have.

I have a quaife that I need to get installed, so I'm trying to figure out what to do with this speedo gear issue?
