Dressage (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dressage) was made an Olympic sport. I'm sorry, but horse training is not a sport.

If your talking about endurance and physical fitness, no not at all. But then Curling is not really a sport either.
To me, being an olympian, is about discipline, concentration, preparation, etc. and of course endurance and fitness....But it takes a lot of strength to take command of a horse.

When the Olympics were held in St Louis in 1904 Tug o' War was a highly respected and popular sport.

if youve ever seen a "pro" tug team its a very interesting thing to watch. theres a lot of stragity involved other than just pulling

It was also interesting when a pro TOW team beat a Mercedes SL65AMG.

How much HP does the average man have?
sonza68
06-08-2006, 11:20 AM
Not much, but when you put a car with 700+ ft-lb of torque on damp pavement, all it does is spin its tires (at least when the traction control is turned off).

I gets a little more complex too though if you think about it.
How many guys were there in the tow?
You have to think that these guys are all at least pushin 220lbs. And I bet thats being really conservative.
The SL is not that big of a car either, so I don't think that it's that heavy. Although knowing how Mercedes builds their cars like Panzer Tanks, it prolly does.
When these guys are leaning back, the rope at their level is prolly higher the where it would be attahed at the back of the car...Thus they could be pulling up on the back end lessening it's weight on the tires. It wouldn't make sense to hook it up to the front...Less torque in reverse.
Also...With that engine (738 ft. lbs I think) even if you turned off the ESP at a light and pegged it...You'd just burn rubber. Put the ESP on and it will apply the breaks so your not getting maximum torque down.
I can easily believe that they pulled back a SL 65AMG....I saw one of those things up north last summer...A guy near by has one...That thing is a friggin sick car, and it sounds awesome...$259,000CDN. For that money though, and that Genre of car, I'd take a Bently Continental GT instead. With a W12!!!

It was 8-10 guys, I don't remember exactly, and they were definately 200+ with several that looked to be around 230-250. The SL is a bit of a porker though, weighing in around 4000 lbs.

Typical...British supporters still givin the Krauts a hard time.
It may be a porker, but at least they never suffered from having Lucas Electrical systems!!!
Anyone who's know's their history on British cars or electronics will know exactly what I'm sayin!!!
Edit: Can't wait for World Cup action to start...Gonna have to put on my 'Deutsche Fussball Bund' shirt on now. I'd like to see the Brits and Germans square off again...I think the last time they played each other was semi's at Italia '90.

Sorry I don’t really read the forums at all...so I just saw this....
Dressage is an art and before you go bashing it try operating every part of your body independently...and at the same time controlling every thought going through the horses head and every muscle in the horses body and thus every movement it makes. It’s very complex. It’s a goal people and horses spend their entire lives working towards.

I'm not saying skill isn't involved, but I still don't see it as a proper Olympic sport.

Lots of things take great skill but shouldn't be in the Olympics. Like Figure skating!
Basically anything that has to be judged!

You would be removing a lot of events then, out of the games...That argument could be used to remove hockey out too. Remember the controversy about the officiating in Salt Lake City in the Womens gold medal game...The Canadians were getting called for anything and everything and the Americans got nothing against them...Having said that, the Canadian's still won. Could you imagine the controversy that would have errupted from that, had they lost.
There is going to be controversy in every sport whether it's a judged event or not...Like I said before, the theme about the olympics is about skill, dedication, preparation, determination, stamina, and conditioning.
Thats why jumping and dressage are in it. Same with figure skating. Also...those sports have been in the games for so long, and they are prelude's to making it in the pro's that taking them out of the olympics would damage their prospecting system.
I don't view sports just by how big your muscle's are, or how much you have to sweat...It's about gamesmanship, and competing for the top prize.
Remember the old sayin...'Be a good sport'...

Well Hockey isn't someones personal opinion of how well you played. You have to score to win. There is a clear cut winner and loser. Yes you might get bad officiating, but in the end you have to put the puck in the net to win. There is way more officiating scandals in Figure skating than any other sport or Non sport!

Your absolutely right...I wasn't trying to dispute that. I've even thought the same, about what you said, before. That maybe some events shouldn't be in the games.
The pairs figure skating in Salt Lake was the perfect justification too. But, thats the way those sports are, even outside of the olympics too. And for the most part, they've always been judged pretty objectively too.
Also, its not just the judges personal opinion about how well an event was performed. There are some very strict criteria that has to be met. Standards for techniques, and such. Its not as 'grey' as people are led to believe. Thats why they also have a panel of judges too, to off-set the odd one that may be way out on either side of the grading. They have also put in a good system now since Salt Lake. The highest and lowest scores are taken out, to provide a more median grade, and reduce the influence of bias. A judge is not just going to throw in tens or ones now to help out another athelete because they know that their score will be taken out anyway.
