I bodyboard, actually. If I could swim better, I might be into surfboarding.
If you are willing to drive to Atlantic City, then I suggest Virginia Beach as well. Especially around Hurricane season. The East Coast is a bit different from Hawaii in that storms actually create BETTAH waves. The East Coast Surfing Championship is held in VA Beach every year, so it must be pretty decent.
Where did you surf when you were in Hawaii? North Shore? That place is crazy in the winter time. I could barely handle it in the summer. There was no ways I was going out there in the winter!
Oh yeah, by the way, Aloha! ;)

I just about surfed everywhere except the east shore of Ohau. I have been half way up north shore surfing and didn't make it out to Pipeline or Sunset beach. Just a little too far for me to go for a couple hours. The largest I would surf is around 15 foot faces. Or Hawaii Scale about 10 feet.
You don't have to know how to swim too well to Surf. You just have to know how to stay cool and hold your breath when you wipe out on a big wave. Then pull you board towards you to get up.
I'll prbably head to both beaches this summer. Thanks and Aloha!

oh yeah, one other thing about AC. You gotta pay to be on the beach. The times that I have been up there, I haven't really noticed that the surf has been all that great. You might honestly be better off with Dewey. It's still kind of touristy, but not as...run down.
