Is it worth it??????performance gains??? I already have a cat back exhaust and well i was wondering if a hi flow cat will free up more air
I would recommend a hi-flow cat only if you've done everything else to the exhaust (headers, cat-back). I have the headers and Borla dual, and am currently waiting for Random Technology to complete their Cougar-spec bolt in hi-flow cat (replaces the stock one at the flanges). I wouldn't go for a weld in, due to that being a non-reversable (well, easily) mod. Just in case emissions comes back negative, I can swap the stock system back in.
HP increase would be negligible. Maybe 1 or 2hp after you've done the other work. Don't forget, the majority of the exhaust restrictions come from the exhaust manifolds and pre-cats. Headers should be your primary objective.
Hope this helps,

Hey Dan are you saying I spent $400 on the sho shop y pipe for nothing i/expressions/frown.gif What about that 8hp garentee they have saying that it was dynoed at that? I just hope that I can make that and the headers fit together. Either way I already got someone lined up for the y pipe whom said that they would pay $100 for either one. That means that I will get my headers for around $500.

i have the sho shop y-pipe and high flow cat. i installed this at the same i installed borla exhaust though. i notice cosiderable gain but i cannot tell you how much gain came just from the y-pipe and cat. just looking at stock y-pipe and the sho shop you can see a diff. the sho shop doesnt have a bend in it that the stock does. i would say the sho shop y-pipe is worth it. i ordered it from spmotorsports and it also came with a straight pipe to replace to cat. this weekend i intend to swap the cat out. but i have to get the cougar inspected first.

Not at all! You didn't waste your money- You've just made it a tad incompatible if you want to go to the headers at a later date. ScottyB's question was whether just a hi-flow cat was worth it- My response was to get the headers first. I'm running the headers and Borla with a STOCK cat- When the time comes for me to swap out the cat, I don't expect that much difference. You took out that nasty U-bend when you went with the SHO Shop- That will definitely help. The MSDS headers still have that U-bend, but at least it's mandrel bent (err.. two mandrel bent 90 degree bends welded together... Oh well)

Yeah that is what I figured but everyone keeps saying that "oh that little bend don't do nothing". Well I can't wait until this summer when I get my headers and dyno my car.

You know the Converters don't restrict air flow hardly at all, even if i had the extra $ to waste and could get the replacement, it's not even going to change anything, not worth any time or effort.
Just adding my .02cents.

Ok people just want them for no reason then. Oh and if converters don't restrict air then why is it that most of the hp gained by headers is by getting rid of the two cats on the headers? Hmmmm
