I just did this, and I know your frustration. In fact, I took some pics after I was done... of my busted up hands.
I used like a 10 inch extension and a u-joint IIRC, plus a deep-well 13mm. I also used a 3/8" to 1/2" converter and used the bigger 1/2" ratchet for more leverage. The breaker bar wouldn't line up right for a good turn.
As for getting it back in, use some electrical tape and wrap it around both the socket and the flange on the bolt, then guide it into the hole with the extension and slip the ratchet on.
Good luck.

Me I got it from the top.. there's a rusty 8mm nut which is holding the big pack of wires... its in the back of the engine near the firewall on the vavle cover. Once you got this unbolted you can push the wire pack near the firewall and access the TOP 13mm bolt on the alternator with a ratchet... to bolt it back.. dont put the L bracket back on the alternator... and you will have access to the top hole from underneath the car... no need to remove the y-pipe whatever.. just unbolt the Tie-Rod. Its PITA.. but its "DOable"
