Saw another post about scoops and didn't want to hijack it, so I was wondering if anyone has any pics of a cougar with a funtional scoop that is perminately mounted so when you open the hood it actually doesn't move. Sort of like the many on the old muscle cars I see at shows all the time.

Like the shaker hood on the mustang. Your not going to find one on the cougar unless someone makes it and to date, no one has

Mussel = clams and other shellfish
Muscle = a brain needs exercise just like a muscle

You won't find a 99-02 Cougar with a "shaker" scoop (so called because it shakes under the hood because it is directly connected to the engine). All 99-02 Cougars are fuel injection and the Air intake is no longer on the TOP of the motor like with the old school carburated muscle cars. I suppose someone with time and ingenuity could modify an I4 to have a shaker scoop. One could even modifiy the entire UIM of the V6 that would center the throttle body under the hood and ... oh forget it...

you mean like a shaker scoop??? i've never seen one of those on a cougar, maybe on one of the original oldschool cougars but not a 99-02. the only modern car that comes to mind that has something like that is the MACH-1 mustangs.

I know GMK makes a cold air intake, and I get the part about fuel injection, but I was just wondering rather than mount it though the drift hole etc, if anyone has fabricated a true CAI that uses a hood scoop. If someone has lambo doors (which I thought would never happen) I thought someone would probably have a pic around somewhere.

P.S. thanks for the correction on muscle, I mean for christ sake I am only a HS math teacher with a masters from Duquesne...you think I could at least spell it correctly...lol

of course the engine would shake in the wrong direction (forward and back)

and if you want the best performance and traction then you would be installing solid motor mounts or filling them with urathane so the end result would be a motor which doesnt move or 'shake' making your scoop mod pointless.

Plus having such an intake would probably loose HP over the stock setup since it would have to be very restrictive and have a very sharp 180 degree bend.

IMO this would be a Ricer mod.

GMK...I know you have far more knowledge on the topic. What I was thinking right (beside your CAI) all the air is taken from the engine bay and not being forced into the intake. Since many people are worried about water in the engine bay why not have a perminately mount scoop (not worrying about the actual shaker effect). Mind the "graphics below", but this is the idea
..................................--------\
Top view...air in >-----scoop........\

This could also be done where the scoop is still attached to the car and when it is closed it has a rubber seal. I am sure there are many better ways to do this but this is just something I was throwing around to find out if if anyone has modded there cougar to actually get forced air into their intake through a hood scoop.

there isnt enough room between the hood and the engine to accomplish such a design. Its less than 1"

actually i could make a CAI which would draw directly from the fog light hole on the drivers side. Essentally making a ram air intake.

However the cost would outweigh any benefit.

but what about if you added a visteon style scoop...and then cut out the hood under the scoop, since there is no major hood support there. That would give you another inch to work with. There's got to be some kind of tubing/piping that would work, and some kind of filter.....right?

XRC made a bit¢hen shaker for the twin-cam Saturn I4. They are out of business now... coincidence?

what about just buying the tuner hood from customcougars.com its got a slit right about where the intake is.

Yes but that wouldnt be a functional ram/intake like hes talking about. Where the slit is doesnt provide enough room for tubing it would take for any sort of intake that would work with a side mounted TB.

That's what I ended up doing! It left me without the drivers side fog light, but I can live with that ;)

You can see the filter in the pic below:
