I just had mine apart and there was indeed two electrical hook-ups on the glass.. i assume they are constantly in defrost mode since on the ford CD they say this:
Pin: 1
Circuit: 15S-HB37(GN/BK)
Circuit Function:
Voltage, ignition switch in Start or Run (not overload protected), switched
so as long are the y key is turned the car is supplying some sort of voltage to them

i think they might turn on when you press the defrost button. there was a thread about it awhile back.

I thought I read that it comes on with the front defrost automatically when its switched to that position.

Voltage, ignition switch in Start or Run (not overload protected), switched
That means the ignition switch needs to be in Start or Run, AND that the switch needs to be switched - that's the last switched in the description.
The heated mirrors are heated when the rear electrical defrost is turned on.
If you look up the diagram for the rear defroster, I bet you'll find a similar circuit number and that they both lead back to the same switch.

Yup, mine come on with the rear defrost, this was tested and proven when we had my car in pieces and I was bored with a multimeter. ;)

the wire running the heated rear view mirrors is powered by what? And would it be possible to tap into that suker for some L.E.D's

I have already established the wire you can use for LED's. Its located in a thread in the audio and electrical section. Look there and see what I wrote.
