And you feel the need to be able to travel in excess of 120 MPH . . . why, exactly?

Do you have the tires capable of handling those speeds? How are your brakes doing? You really think the crappy rear drum brakes on your non-sport Cougar are gonna be sufficient to stop the car from 140 MPH?

BBO u always say the same thing and it's so true. it's not worth it. who cares about top speed. it just matters how quick your car is. IMO

I care about top speed...

But then again, thats only when I'm on extremely long drives home and I just want that moment of pure adrenalin at 3 AM in BFE georgia.

I just want to see how fast she can go, just once.

Look, I ain't gonna lie, I've had my car up near 150 one day, racing a Corvette on the interstate. I don't know exactly how fast I was going cuz I was focused on not dying a horrid death. But I digress.

There's almost nothing stock about my car. Tires, brakes, suspension, all of that has been vastly improved. Does that make it "ok" for me to drive as fast as I can and for him not to? Well, perhaps not "ok" but I'm certainly in a better position than someone with a bone-stock Cougar would be.

Tires are rated to handle certain speeds. Now, that doesn't mean one MPH over the posted speed rating of a given tire it's going to explode. But what if your tires are in piss-poor shape and one of them gives out at 140 MPH? Thats not gonna be pretty.

Braking distances increase substantially the faster you go. I've driven a stock, drum-equipped Cougar, and it felt VERY unsafe to me. I'm not saying the brake system isn't sufficient, but from someone who is a VERY aggressive driver and is used to substantially more "bite" when I brake, it was not a very comforting feeling.

And finally, what is the point? My car rarely sees north of 100 any more. Yeah, its fun to run it up that fast. But its not really worth the risk to yourself and to other people around you to drive that fast.

I have no problem with anyone topping out their car. I've done it in all the cars I've owned . . . well, I haven't truly topped out the Cougar, but I know it won't go any faster than 157 (thank you stock gearing!) and I've been in the 150 range, so thats good enough for me.

I just want people to consider everything possible, that there's more to it than just wanting to go Mach three with your hair on fire.

I've heard it all depends on what type of cougar you have, i have heard that most of the special edition cougars dont have a governer on them but most of the stock ones do, and the stock ones cut out around 115 but there are people that know how to get around it but its not work the time or effort and most of all even if you do have a radar detector, you wont be able to slow down in time and you will be screwed.......not that i havent maxed out the cougar cause i have

All Cougars are rev-limited. NON-sport packaged Cougars (15" wheels from the factory) are speed-limited to 115 or 120 MPH, due to the speed rating of the 15" tires they came with. Sport package Cougs (16" wheels from the factory) are not speed limited, they'll go to whatever your FWHP is able.

my tires are rated at 150mph plus but doesnt mean im going to do that speed. Screw that I did 130mph and called it good...going that fast at night made me think twice. My tires are a ZR rated, got crossed drilled and slotted rotors, bigger pads and cap., sway bar, strut tower brace, eibach springs, but like that guys said if i was to have a blow out then its going to be FUGLY.

i find this info incorrect... Mine is a 99 mtx sport package and it cuts out (speed limiter) at 131 mph... from what I understand all of the cars are different, dependent on tire ratings/rim size, model/trim package, regardless my cougar has upgrades on the braking and suspension ends and 131 mph in this car is frieking ridiculous. Give it up, if you want to go that fast in a drum brake equipped coug, feel free, just make sure you where a crash helmet and your seat belt.

Then maybe you have an oddball Coug, or do you have added weight? or drag inducing body kit mods? If you want to base this on anecdotal evidence, I've seen more posts from people going faster than 131 MPH in V6 Sport Packages then your one post about not.

So I guess we disagree.

Yea I have a base-model Zetec with drums & I've gone the top speed of 120mph. Yes it is a challenge to stop without losing control with stock braking, When I was young & dumb. Nothing special I really don't see the point of having to drive that fast anymore. It's much more fun trying to get the 1/4mi times under 16 flat for me.

you might infact find that the governor is put on your cougar for a reason. for your own personal saftey. if you want a higher top speed. just sell you "slow" one and buy a sport packaged cougar

Is the XR Package the top sport package avail on the 02 Cougar? Dumb question I know just that some say the 35th Aniversary is.

pro- you die and we have one less newbie to bother us
con- i have to feel bad when you die.

instead of taking it out. buy another car and race on a licensed track. PLEASE stay off of the roads i travel.:gtfo:

I have not found a "speed limiter" on mine, just a lack of gear. I have topped mine out once, just to see what it could do...hit 138mph at 6800rpm in fifth gear. In other words, it was the fast as it would go...no more gear...no more revs

. . .

Stock gearing runs out at 157 MPH. Your car did not run out of gear, it ran out of power. Put simply, your car no longer had sufficient power to overcome the drag incurred at 138 MPH.

I know this to be true because A.) Someone did the math on the gearing and B.) I've had the car north of 150, as previously stated.

I am sure thats all it had...it bounced off the limiter...unless the speedo is off, that was all it had

I guess I will just have to try again :)

no seriously, those who remove the govenors so you can see how fast your car WILL go.... i hope the ****er blows the **** up and your stuck with a nice fat blown engine. And then when the insurance company asks whats wrong, you can explain "I was doing this sweet impression of Vince Diesel for my 3 friends that i tried to kill in the car with me". Theres a reason its on the car.... why do you feel the need to go faster then 120 mph...? Seriously, give a good reason.

Odds maby he has stock tires, if so stock tires are not made how they were in the old says when speed limits were 80, and ppl would go 100, so the companies made the tires take 120 pmh max breaking fine, today speeds are 55, and the tires were made to take about 80, go 140 + and have to slam on ur break, ur dead.

TrackCat
07-17-2006, 12:27 AM
I go to the track about 6 times in the summer and top speed can be reach real fast on a track. I find you need track time to better improve your driving then to worry about top speed. Go to the track and learn better car control, where it's legal. . Just ask yourself why? and think about if first. I hope when you do try reaching your top speed I hope nothing wrong happens thats all. I will not bash you and condem you to hell like the others just play it safe and hope nothing bad happens if you decide to take this route. If you want you can come with me and my friends to some SCCA events instead and race with us on a track if free I'm in Chicago.

P.S. On the fast and the furious the governors were not removed at all the cars were only allowed to go at 70mph only do to Legal restrictions.

i have experoienced a car sutting out...but not my cougar
i was just wondering if my gov. had already been messed with prior to my ownership of the car.
i got it up to 138 just barely over a 1/4 mile, and it didn't cut out, but it just seemed like it didn't want to go any faster...

from a dead stop to .03 miles by the car's odometer i was going 138 slightly uphill, and all i have is a bone-stock v6 (as far as I know) that is meaner than ANY stock v6 cougar that I have driven or raced.
not to mention that i have done this more than once....120 is NOTHING for my car in 4th gear...

Well, actually, SORRY for the typo, but i meant .3 (as in 3 tenths) of a mile. And, YES, i said just OVER a 1/4 mile, and that would be correct, because I am not stupid and know that 1/4 is the same as .25, which our lovely cars do not measure...so i guesstimated between .2 and .3.
Furthermore, I am not full of anything, if u would like for me to prove it to you, find someone in the KyTn section that can meet me, and they can ride with me, or I will show them. I however DO NOT appreciate your smart*** comment just because I made a common mistake and didn't pay atttention to the message before I sent it.
