My wife's cougar was towed to the Mercury dealer today, after it died on the freeway. It was leaking coolant onto the roll truck, and the dealership says there is a lot of metal in the oil pan, a new motor is needed. They gave me the usual $5500 quote.
I have no mechanical ability, or desire to replace an engine myself. How possible would it be, to find someone local to get this back on the road, for under $2500?
I guess I'll take a jack down and swap out the wheels for the stock 15's, and see if a local wrecking yard wants it. Sad end to a nice car.
Black 99 Cougar, V6 MTX. Aftermarket 16 inch rims, mp3-cd player.

In Kansas City? I'm remotely considering having it towed home, but there's a van in my spare driveway that I don't have the keys for, so I can't park the Cougar there... And $100 or more for a tow, takes away from what I can get out of the car.
If you can offer $500, and are local or willing to transport, I'll keep you in mind.

Yeah! I just learned that I can get the engine replaced for around $2300. Sounds like a good deal to me. I guess the Cougar is saved!
I went down to the dealership to take some pictures of the broken Cat, discovered the engine no longer even turns over, so there is catastrophic failure inside.
btw.. I've been here since our Cougar was new in '99. I just didn't post until 2005.

**** son! I hope you get an engine swap, 5500 is redicoulous tell them to blow you, go 3L and spend 3G's that'll get you the engine and the install! You could do it yourself for a heck of a lot cheaper though! Hope everything works out!
