Has anyone ever set up an auto-cross event? I would like to set up an event this summer/fall. I want to go full out, get as many people as possible, try getting sponsors...

My question is: has anyone ever taken on this task? Any tips?

I've never actually set one up, but I'd recommend starting by contacting your local SCCA region for assistance. Land O Lakes Region (http://www.scca-lol.org/)

Quick checklist of the basics that you'll need:
- site
- insurance
- cones
- timing equipment
- course design
- early workers for course/timing set up

See if you can work with the local SCCA, sometimes you can "rent" them.
Nice thing about having the SCCA there, is that they can offer good advice
for local novices, as well they carry 1,000,000 dollar insurance. etc etc...
