hey everyone, i'm fairly new w/ regards to cougar engine mods. i've been doing some research about trying to upgrade. i've been finding a lot of parts that are strictly for a vct motor and some that are strictly for a non-vct motor. what exactly is vct? also, i've seen kits available to convert a vct to a non-vct. what does doing this conversion do? what is the benifit of having or not haveing vct? also what are interchangable parts to instal on the cougar motor? i'm looking to do some cam and head work but need to invest in a new head since my cougar is my daily driver. what is a head and cams that are interchangable w/ the stock vct motor?

vct means varibale cam timing, its a little emission thing that ford used on the cougar, contour, and zx2. if you get rid of it not only will you need the vct delete kit but also, youll have to have a chip tuned or youll have a check engine light all the time. if you want aftermarkey cams, you can use only the intake cam from a ford focus or ford zx2. if you delete the vct you can use both the intake and exhaust cam for a zx2. As for interchangable heads, you can use one from a cougar, zx2, of later model ford contour, all with the zetec engine. All of these engines have vct so theyll work without a problem. you can use a focus head, but it would take a custom tuned chip to let the computer no that there is no vct. You can use some performance parts from the zx2 and focus, like adjustable cam gears and lightened crank pullies. Some of the exhaust headers from the zx2 and focus can be used also on the cougar. There's a post at the top of this section that has a list of parts that are able to be used and here's a link where you can look at cams. if you have questions you can ask them here or email Rob at zxtuner, he's answer a few questions for me and is pretty helpful.

i think if you use ZX2 cams you can use both since thier engine is identical to ours...if using anything focus or contour related then you can only do the intake side...

you can use any of the shorty headers available for any zetec...but you will need a custom down tube...

as for 4-2-1 heades only the cougar ones will fit directly..

U CANNOT USE A FOCUS EXHAUST CAM IN OUR VCT HEAD, EVEN IF U DELETED THE VCT IT WILL NOT WORK!!!

U can only interchaneg the intake cams from a Focus head to a ZX2 or cougar head.
