You'll find many of us have that shifter, and just as many opinions as to whether it's actually any different than cutting down your stock one.

There was a really, really long thread on that a while back.

I bought the cosmo short shifter on ebay....I love it.....Seach for the debate thread on the Cosmo and B+M....I think the Cosmo does the same thing for a lot less IMO...

Actually, I would not buy that link, unless I was POSITIVE of what i was getting. I did a lot of research and cross-comparison before I bought my shirt shifter (which i am happy with). That is the same pic as some advertised as "one-piece" construction - which I assue to mean that the lockout and the knob are one-piece. To me, that means that the lockout would not go up and down and function as a lockout.

Understand - I have NOT seen this item - I could very well be wrong. I would take the time to ask the vendor to verify that the lockout mechanism will be spring loaded and functional - I did and am happy with what I got (except the blue anodizing - I wanted Natural or maybe Red, but blue is what I got)

My only advise is if you get the Cosmo Racing Short Shifter, make sure when taking off the retaining clip be very very careful. If it breaks you are screweed because it doesnt come with a new clip. The B&M short shifter comes with an extra clip but its more expensive. I broke my retaining clip changing my shifter and when i asked cosmo racing to send me one they said they would but its been 2 weeks and still no clip... just giving some advise from experience.

You can buy that clip from Ford I believe, you just gotta ask for the one for a Focus, they are the same, but Ford doesn't have one listed for the Cougar IIRC.

speaking from experience.
bought my first sts from ebay few years ago... my thinking was, heck, it looks like B&M, it should work like it... worked fine for about 3 months... On my way home from Dallas, on the tollway. I shift to 1st after paying my toll... and nothing!!! i try desperately to get the car in gear and nothing was happening. I popped the shift boot and the damn cable retainer was broke at the bottom. I had to push the cable to get it in gear so i could limp the car over to the side of the road.

moral of the story? get B&M and you will never be sorry.

You mean the ball on the bottom of the shifter or the clip thing that holds the cable on? If your talking about clip thing that has nothing to do with the type of shifter:shrug:

Just installed my B&M shifter a couple weeks ago, I love it and you deffinately notice the short throw, I'm use to it now and now this feels like I'm shifting just as far as I use to so I wouldn;t want to switch back because it would feel liek I was going like twice as far and I'd be a worse driver, but yah it makes enough of a difference that you have to relearn your driving of the car for the first day or so! I love mine and so far no complaints!

I dont know whats wrong with B&M but their price are over priced. They are f***ing scaring people about other short shifters because they are not so expensive. All shifter are made of stainless stell and I believe the quality is almost the same and it wouldnt be noticeable. I would go with the CC or Cosmo.

I believe in, "You get what you pay for." Also the B&M has a million mile warranty and its B&M!!

I had an eBay shifter and the weld on the bottom ball broke off going uphill... the third day I had it. Yea, so that royally sucked. Luckily for me, it was 1/2 mile form my house, so I walked home, got some tools and the stock shifter and put that all back in.

I went out and purchased the Steeda shifter and it's still going strong after 3 years.

After my experience, you learn that "you get what you pay for" and if you buy these cheap eBay shifters, keep the sotck shifter and tools in the car. It's just a matter of time.....

Hope this helps...

Does anyone know if the Ford Racing/Steeda short shifter will it work on the V6? I have found it on a few Focus websites, but they all say it's for the Zetec only.

That's beside the fact. I paid for a new shifter and recieved a used, partially rusted, incomplete version. I also waited 10 days to get this marvel of a shifter.

i have a ebay one. my shifter cables have come off the shifter at inopertune times. basically i think there was some batches of those shifter where the ball on the shifter that attaches to the cables is a little bit too smallso the cables connect and sit on but sometimes will pop off

i will be buying a b&m when i get home

question about that, when u get a short shifter installed,.. does it automaticly remove that slip-ring under the knob that u have to pull up to put in reservse. I really don;t want that there if i get a short shifter....

ClaymoreWW

That slider has two functions:

1. the primary function is to prevent you from going into reverse accidentally, like from 3 to 4th, missing 4th and going into reverse or from 5th into, oops-grind - I have no 6th.

2. the secondary function is a place to attach the boot top to.

If you don't care about locking out reverse and feel ok with a boot just hanging up in mid-air, you can leave it off, if you want.

so then if i get a short shifter, is there an option to keep the slip-ring on there then???

MrNiceguy
02-23-2006, 11:50 PM
Yeah, a modified reverse lockout system comes with each short shifter. It looks much better with the lockout on there because of that being where the shift boot attaches at top.

ClaymoreWW

yeah, they come with the lock-out assembly...I feel it should be kept operational, but I am sure some have removed it completely.
