Hey my buddy keeps talking smack about the cougar and clames he'd smoke me. He's got a '03 Cavalier with the 2.2L ecotec, he also has a cat-back exhaust and a short ram air intake, it is also the 5-speed mtx crazy body kit, neons, ricer wing, and four subs. I was wondering what you guys think, should I put money on the race or do I stand a chance.

The only mods I've done to my V6 is a short ram intake and a ASP underdrive pully.

Ecotec Cavaliers aren't that fast. 140 horses out of the box, and not exactly light on that new Delta platform. I say with his mods, he's running a high 15. Even race, if you know how to drive.

This thread is dumb. Just get it over with.

THANK YOU JIM!

Sorry 'bout that. :flushed:

Either way, they don't have an independent rear suspension

I watched a stock 2.2 ecotech race an 04 Mazda 3 hatch with a header, exhaust, and cold air. The mazda 3 beat him by MAYBE a hood. Both were automatic. I've heard reports of Mazda 3s being slow, so I'm not sure how Mazda 3s compare to a Cougar. I was thinking Mazda 3s were a little slower than Cougars.

For reference, a auto 03 ecotech runs 17.2 (my friend has one), and another guy who has a chipped Manual 03 ecotech runs about a second faster at 16.2.

My stock auto runs 16.8, so my friend wasn't too far behind, however at top gear, he didn't fair as well. So it all depends, but you should honestly beat him.

I think granted you know how to race you'll beat him

I hear that, but not everyone lives where winter blows. As long as the roads are dry/unsalted and the skies clear it can't be too bad, wait, that never happens in Ohio either.

Thanks guys, should be a fun race. I think I'll take 'em. But now that you brought it up.. yeah we haven't gotten any snow this year, I think it snowed two or three times this year and i live in canada eh! I'm not complaining tho it's kind of nice for a change.

What is this snow you guys speak of? lol... like 4 years ago we got something close to that. It snowed all night, but then the temp got warm enough the next day that it was raining again... at night everything froze and it got ugly quickly. Power was out for like 2 weeks...

...and you southerners can NOT drive in the snow. I experienced that once on a trip to the grand canyon, in the spring, and it snowed :disgust: wtf?

no offense. ;)

Very true. I'm from Colorado, I drove to a ski area every day, up and down the fuggin snowiest pass up there. If you can drive skillfully like a bat out of hell IN THE SNOW, you can rock ANYWHERE! AZ drivers flip the **** out when there's a drop of RAIN, much less snow!

You should win hands down. 2.2 Cav has no pick-up w/ only 140hp. Also, Mazda 3 can be slow if it's not the 2.3S model. 2.3S has 160hp & w/ the 5 speed gearbox it is not that much slower than a 2.5 MTX Cougar. One of my friends had one (I think an '04) and he stayed close until 5th gear when I pulled ahead. Both cars were stock at the time.

Awesome thanks dude!  this should be a fun race, I want to do it the sooner the better but he's not driving his car in our snowless winter we're having (very weird, no snow in Canada) but yeah I should be getting exhaust done next weekend  then I'll def. kick some Cavi butt! I'll post the Cavi murder in road tales when I finally race him (probably not until like April-May (hopefully sooner tho). Thats really good news about thoes Mazda 3's too ironicly my buddies ex who is kind weird/crazy  claims that her 3 (completly stock) could take a cougar lol ..it was hard not to laugh in her face..wate a sec! I DID laugh in her face!!  She thought her car have 190 something odd horsepower:bs: lol. But yeah hopefully I meet her on the strip so I can kick the crap outta her little Focus with Mazda markings hehe. But yeah thanks dudes!!!

02-09-2006, 01:23 PM
Hey, you know you might have went to far there. Both the Focus & the 3 are respectable cars in their own rights.
To start out the Mazda 3 is not a focus @ all. It is a comon misconception that Mazda 2.3L & 3L are duratec engines when the truth is they are not. They do share many of the same components, but not quite the same. And for the record I would much rather own a Mazda 3S than an SVT Focus.

About the only cavy given equal drivers that is going to keep up/match with a MTX v6 Cougar is the z24. The pushrod 2.2 is going to get its ass handed to it, and The ecotech while being decent with a good powerband, will also fall short on its butt. The ecotech however has FAR more tuning potental then all 3, the only problem is you have to have A LOT of money. Some ECU tuning to a stock mtx ecotech however will prob. get it to match a stock mtx cougar, but then we could do the same.

awesome, thanks guys. I thought it would be a drivers race, but yeah he does have the 2.2L ecotec so I think I have the upper hand.:)

Yeah you should be fine, the ecotec's jump off the line just about as well as z24's though, so be careful. However you should more then have him through midrange and def. high end. They def. cannot match our top end, and we simply have more midrange power.

No way. Ecotecs are cheap and easy to mod. It's going to be the motor to have; probably knock the B18 off its pedestal, if GM doesn't eff it up...

GM not f something up? Hell they won't even be around to see the day THAT motor knocks any other motor off of any pedestal...oh n/m...none of us will cause it will be a cold day in hell before an Ecotec is at the top of the pedestal:rofl:
