99 coug atx 2.5L here looking for some help and hoping that some people here would post mods that can be done and what you get the most out of.As in intakes, headers, and so on.Most bang for your buck because as i surf around theres so much stuff. My engine is stock cept exhaust and looking at a lil boost.I was lookin at buying injen intake..good idea?Well any help would be great...thx

From what I've been told, headers and intake will help you the most. Look to go for nitrous next.

Like Nafanu said..You can go with an intake next. Headers..Then after that it all depends on your long term goal..there are swaps you cna do or leave your 2.5 and change to a SVT manifold an TB.

Oh yeah, forgot about the SVT parts. Those would probably be better to get before nitrous. I am currently in the process of swapping out my 2.5 to a 2001 escape 3.0l.

GMK CAI, MSDS headers, SVT parts

You said you want the most bang for the buck. SVT parts are lots of buck, and little bang, when compared to nitrous.

I'd say, GMK CAI, headers, nitrous and then if you want svt parts, finally chip.

I am new to modding as well, I have gotten a lot of advice from this site to get a cold air intake, headers, and to do a 3.0 swap. They seem like they know what they are talking about, I am looking into saving for my headers and 3.0 engine myslef.

By the time you pay for SVT parts you could have just gone with a full 3L had had more power to start with. Go that route if you are serious. Then again if you were serious about making more power you should have started with a manual Cougar. The ATX in our cars really sucks the power out of them. Trading for a manual cougar would be worth it before you start modding because everyone eventually wants to switch to one when they get into modding. Otherwise when you mod it you get too attached to it and you can't break even because the mods don't add value to your car.

Thanks for all the help asi just spent a lil bit of cash on Injen cold air intake and B&G 1.75 inch drop springs.Looking at nitrous next as at around 600-700 bucks seems to be the best bang for the buck.Headers will be first along with finishing the exhaust to 2.5 inches to make sure everything breathes well. With all the swaps and F/I around here all costs alot as NOS is relativly cheap.Ive read a bit on air/fuel ratios...having the right gauges and tuning everything to run properly.

Sounds like you're on the right track!

And please. Please. Please don't call it "NOS". Stupid :banghead: frakin' :banghead: movie :banghead: !!!!

Thx Dan and ill call it nitrous is that better lol?I was only lookin at nitrous because of the price and have messed with it on V8's but always thought that V8 wise you had to have solid internals. And here concerning the 2.5L it seems as long as air/fuel is monitored well and good tuning is done nitrous would be a good investment.I need to read up on SVT uim and bracket before doing that as i already have a good exhaust just need to bump up to 2.5 inch.So it seems nitrous then headers then Svt uim, bracket then finishing larger exhaust. Is there anything different with installing nitrous on a atx to a mtx?

Never 1/4'd... Only dynoed. These cars can't launch to save their life... Demon was breaking axles with just a 3L w/SVT cams...

Yeah, I dunno why the transaxle has so many problem, with any half decent power. You REALLY have to build the **** outta em.

fwd ford transmissions, gotta love em lol. From what I know, the c4de auto is cap. of handling more power the the MTX75. However, this auto loves to suck power. So its really a 50/50 split.

ok, Whats a GMK CAI ???? .. it's not in Dans performance section...

It's a custom made CAI from none other then GrandMasterKahn. As of now, it fits the best, and give us the most "dyno power" outta of any other of the intakes.

I believe someone in here dyno'ed it and gained 5-7hp and 4-7ft lbs of torque on a stock platform. (anyone back me up on this?)

wow, made my a member here.. thats awsome. So its a cold air intake, that would benifit me more then a short ram, my main concern is the water issue, it rains to offten here in NC and i know are some things to stop it sucking up water like getting a bypass, but i hear those only work like 60% of the time. :(

Actually all the high HP Cougar/Contours have MTX's. The autos just can't handle the abuse. Snapping axles isn't a transmission problem that's an axle problem and would happen with an ATX or a MTX. Just get lifetime axles from an auto parts store and replace them when they snap. If you bring a high hp Cougar/Contour to the track make sure there is a trailer or the track is near your palce when you go. I'd say a MTX75 with LSD can handle quite a bit if the weak link is the axles.
