Whats up
When i got my 01 MTXv6, it had some tranny problems so i orded a spec stage 1 clutch and UNDX lightweight flywheel, when they repaired the transmission they "upgraded" the tranny 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear. ( cost me alot too..... good ol Ammco) The cougar reves alot faster now, and the clutch feels like a burnt clutch going out.. ( thasts how i am told a performance cluth feels, ).. but my question is, WHY is the HP power to wheels ratio is so big???.. 18%-20% power lose in MTX??
how can can one improve the drivetrain where it doesn't lose that much HP? I hear new axles can help. That true?

a lighter flywheel frees up some of the parasitic loss I guess..

i thought it was in the neighborhood of 14-17% in a FWD tranny.......a little more for a rear drive because of the driveshaft and diff

Make more power...plain and simple.

ilovemycar is right. You have to create more power to put more to the wheels. It is hard to even get close to 5% power loss. As we all know there has never been any machine that was made 100% efficient.

a lsd will help u get power down to the ground and light wheels and light brakes

Actually an LSD will take away a little bit more power if anything. The power has more gears to go thru in order to get to the ground so it only makes sense. It won't be a noticable decrease in power, but it will be there.
It is worth the trade off tho...one because the stock diff sucks bigballs, and two cause you don't have to worry about being a one wheel wonder!

Cougars arnt always a one wheel wonder. i find that im only spinning one tire in the wet. dry, snow, ice, i can feel both wheels spinning.
just thought i would put that out there

In the end just say **** the stock Diff and go with an LSD.

ok i am confused. :banghead:
i though when you put in a lightend flywheel you gained power because it was easier for the engine to turn.
or am i a fool and completly misunderstood the entire thread.

It's actually pretty small, on the manual tranny. But think about it. From the crankshaft, you get a little "give" at the clutch, a little "give" throughout the transaxle, a little inside the differential, a little in the axle, a little in the hub, a little in the tires. You're hemmorhaging power all over the place.
Be glad you don't have a torque converter.

Power is freed up to the transaxle, but your engine isn't actually MAKING any more power. The lightened flywheel doesn't have the parasitic drag of a heavy flywheel- Less rotational mass. Same with aftermarket wheels. The lighter the setup, the more responsive the powertrain. To a point.

A flywheel is basically an energy reservoir. It takes energy to accelerate it but once it is at constant rpm it takes little power to keep it going because it wants to stay at a steady rpm. It takes energy to slow it down also such as brakes or compression from the engine.
Flywheels are used to help make the engine run smoother, especially at idle because it tries to stay at the same rpm.

upgrading the shift forks and shift tower are always good upgrades to help with longevity of your trans, it wont help with power loss just good piece of mind.

wow..
i totally forgot i wrote this thread....
i like what i am hearing... the lighter rims, tires, and brakes, i didn't think that would make a difference, but i guess looking at the axle from a lighter standpoint, i see how it could drop the percentage loss less...
