View Full Version : Cougarfest 2006 Needs a Logo

For the last two years our "logo" was the same and people were not happy about it. It was so bad fights broke out over it (ok not really but I got some feedback about it)

We need some creative geniuses to come up with a good design. As far as I know ND4SPD is the only one with a working prototype. We'll put his and any others posted below up for a vote. Afterwards the winner will receive nothing but a "thank you" and probably some playa haters "hatin" on you at the fest. A thankless job, but someone has to do it. Plus you'll become part of Cougarfest lore, which I plan to tell to my grandchildren after I lose my teeth but before I'm senile.

are you looking for a single color logo for the decals or something colored for t-shirts?

Crispy
02-01-2006, 12:28 PM
something that can easily be cleaned up enough to do perhaps both...

EternalOne

The logo is seperate from the t-shirt design. The logo right now is the "Cougarfest script" that you can see on the Cougarfest.com website. The t-shirt design comes after this. ;) If they can be tied together, tho, that'd rock. (And save cash, heh.)

That's a good question, I'd like to see maybe a black or a blue shirt this year in my opinion.

I don't care aboot the color, as long as the size is nice n big.

ND4SPD
02-01-2006, 06:12 PM
Well, i've volenteer'd a few times to take 100% control over the shirts... from designing to printing to bringing them to the show... I did it last year with great sucess.

I will of course check, but I don't forsee any problems if we were all to vote on 3 or 4 colors... and produce 50 or so shirts of each color?

Either way - I will be working on this stuff all week, weekend and month since its what i've been waiting for! hehe.

I've got an awesome design in my mind but I suck ass at actually putting it out on paper.

IMO, the logo should have something recognisable as "Indy". Possibly have a sketch of a Cougar chillin over a yard of bricks or something? I know if we do St. Louis in '07, obviously we could incorporate the Gateway Arch into it, so I'd love to see something easily identifiable as Indy in the logo.

Something to keep in mind when doing these, I believe to make vinyl OR tshirts we'll need vector graphics -- not your typical JPG. (At least, if we want them to last.)

Also, you need to stay away from gradients, which cannot be done with silk-screening. And limiting the number of colors is a good thing, since the more colors means the more cost per shirt.

Not trying to come off cocky but I've been a professional graphic artist for
over 6 years now. All of my art is or can be converted to vector format.
The first ones I did are in vector but I figured to make something a little
sharper I would try something in PS instead of Illustrator CS2. I design for
a living so I kinda understand it can't be a jpg:rolleyes:

I can print anything I want on a vinyl banner 5'h X 40w' long in shop if
I need to. And we've tested our material it will last through two years
of Ohio seasonal abuse. I believe vinyl graphics/stickers may require
a vector base..if they are being die cut. The above graphic would only
need an oval die so I'm sure that could be done in vinyl.

Gradients...well anything can be turned into a single color or two color
process. But you don't show that to the client as a proof because single
color logos aren't as attractive and people rarely understand why you
only used one color to create it. Just letting you know why I did what I
did.;)

Just to clarify you can print anything you want silk screening. Gradients (like
the first tail logo I made) would only count as a two color process black and
red on a white shirt. One of my designers ran a silk screening shop for two
years.

Not once did I direct that at you. It was a general comment, made so that EVERYONE knew what was required from the graphics. Considering some of the images that have been posted, I figured it was worth mentioning.

While not directly a graphics artist, I do handle the creation of banners, shirts, and vinyl for a mariad of companies all through the year, so I too know what is required.

Just to clarify you can print anything you want silk screening. Gradients (like the first tail logo I made) would only count as a two color process black and red on a white shirt. One of my designers ran a silk screening shop for two years.

Yeah, that was a typo on my part, I meant the gradients cannot be handled by the vinyl and stickers. (You can do it with digitally printed ones, but I've always thought those look like crap and end up very pixelated.) More colors with silk-screening means more cost, and more setup labor. I have a shop that I've worked with a LOT in the past (over 10,000 shirts printed and counting) and they have assured me an unbeatable deal as long as they don't have to eat a ton of labor costs.

Like I said I don't mean to come across like I do...

I assumed it was directed towards me since I was the
only one using multiple colors and gradients. I see it was just a
general statement though.

Either way I'm sure Matt or someone else will come up with
a kick ass logo to be used I was just throwing out some ideas.
I just don't have time to create anything because of work and home
so lets just sit back and see what shows up.

BTW if something came out pixelated through a digital printer they
aren't running it properly. We run a Xerox 6060 and a iGen3 (one of
if not the best high quantity full quality digital printers in the biz)
and if something comes out pixelated it's either an operator error
in the Fiery set-up or the design it self is very low dpi.

Anyone know the old cars from the 50's, how they had the chrome badge that was raised, had the "point" in the middle of the letter? How about making it something like the old Bel Air font? Looks like raised chrome, with all the letters "connected" to each other? Kinda like this?

whats with the secrecy? It appears that one of the commitee members keeps telling the rest of the members that the logo is already mocked up and that it's a go.. I'm on the committee and I have yet to see anything.. Last year it was like pulling teeth to get information from Don... this year its all about whatever 1 person wants or says goes.. argh.

Post whatever you have already... last year it was pushed off and we had about 2 weeks to design a shirt and print it.. I'm not begging Byran at Intricate Lines to play with a small deadline again like last year.. We should have a logo, ideas and all the vector images soon... (this goes for shirts only which some of you have tried to design for thus far)

We should have a logo for shirts picked by the end of the month or mid next month at the latest.. All images will have to be cleaned up and if we need more sponsor images that gives us time to obtain those, agree on colors for shirts and ink colors -- not to mention figure out a total number needed.

As far as the stickers and glassware logos that might not be on as strict of a timeline as the shirts... The more time we give the screen printing company the better the product will be in the end. Bryans always came thru but the last 2 times we made him rush and he wasn't too happy with us.

Wade - Crispy is sponsored by IL and the owner (Bryan) and her are personal friends... of which Bryan is a great guy and has done alot for neco. I would never say 'ditch him' but if he doesn't feel up to it, then most certainly, I do have a great source for printing stuff up here - I could get prices real quick if needed and who knows, it might be cheaper to have it all done here in Canada, and I could just bring it all down with me (since i'm showing up early to Indy)

Intricate Lines has been an offical sponsor for the past 3 CF's and 1 HCKC.. his pricing and product and the fact that we have product in hand by the deadline regardless of how pressed its been is fantastic.

I believe the shirts for 2003 were printed somewhere else and they didn't get to people until months after the event. Not sure who did it but so far IL has a spotless record with providing us by our deadline.

I like Matt's shirts, but I don't like the cougarhead logo with the claw simply because that is VERY similar to the 2003 as LadyX mentioned. Also, I'm not a big fan of having a rendering of an actual picture on the bottom of the shirt. I'd like to see something more along the lines of hand drawn.

I, like Sonza, loved the silhouette!

ND4SPD
02-14-2006, 05:34 PM
AH! I THOUGHT the first logo there felt fimiliar as I was doing it... It was on the virginia beach shirt right?

What about the claw on the shirt? its grabbing it, rather than scraping across it.

And the cougar at the bottom of the shirt I just kinda 'put' there at the last minute.. heh, just to fill in the space - but I could put anything there, i just dont want to throw off the 'balance' of the shirt and clutter it up.

What if i hand drew that same cougar??
I did the first one from the side because Crispy said she liked the drawing approach... I could certainly try the same thing with that picture... but it will take a while, so i'd need a definitive "if its done, it will be used' thing - unless someone who is real good at drawing by hand can do it in less than an hour ;)

Matt, I like those shirts..................except it's Indianapolis, IN, not IA :cover:
OOPS! lol! - easily changable though :)

really like the look of this one. Not a big fan of the graffiti font used, but the rest has a clean, slick look to it. u did a good job on it matt, knew it was worth the wait

Im gonna change my mind sorta, something i posted else where.

I would like to have that black design as a shirt, but not for CF. Its a nice, sleek, and clean design that would be much less impressive with 15 sponsors on the shirt. Go with Matts white design for CF, lets have the black one made to order or something for those that want it :)

well, hey... if Brad lets me use the Cougarfest name, maybe there can be TWO cougarfest shirts... one from IL.com, and one from ND4SPD ;)

I love Matt's general design of the shirt with the offset red racing stripe. Take the claws away from the front, and take the picture of the car off the back, and I think its perfect.

....just my 2 cents
