Has anyone changed the pulley size on their alt.? http://www.h-o-alternators.com/otherpart.htm
This seems to me like it would make a big diff while ideling?

All that pulley is going to be is a little bigger which in turn will make the alt. run faster. It will give you more amps at idle and lower rpm driving. If you are driving normal you are fine.

What about driving normal? wil u get the full output of the alt.?

This is my opinion, I have no knowledge in this field.
This is going to make your alt work at super hard all the time resulting with you broke down on the road. If you want more power then buy a new bigger alt. Plus did you think that if you change the size of the pulley then you are going to have to find a belt to fit?

It's not like the alt has a hard time breaking on it's own anyway. Fett is always stating that a stronger alt won't solve any issues, the one we have is strong enough unless you're running some super-system. But even Excelcier's car is still on a stock alternator.
Most people have found it's a combination of bad wiring and the placement of the alt in general. It's located right above the axel and is easily hit by dirt, debris and water. Cleaning your grounds, putting some anti-corrosion grease on them and look into finding, or making, a shield for the alt to protect it.

mines still on the stock one from 99 *knock on wood* and i see no problems at all... and it isnt hard to find a new belt to fit all you need is a piece of rope to measure the length needed.....

Lets not forget theres a tensioner on the belt that will allow for some variance. How much bigger did you want to make the pulley?

take a look at the link..... its the top picture and it dosent really say how big it is

ummm the pully is going to be smaller not bigger...
the smaller the pulley the faster it will spin at idle, therefore uping your amps. down side of this is that when your are driving in higher rpms your alt will be going 3, 4, 5, 6 times faster then it was designed to...
if drive pully is 5.5 inches and your alt is about 2.5 then for every rotation of your drive pully your alt does 2.5....so at 4000 rpm your alt is going 10000...and for some of you who are constantly hitting 6000 bouncing off the rev limiter that thign is friggin flyin...
now youwant to go and put an even smaller pully on there, it is probably a 2" or 1 3/4" pully now thigs are really flying. now you going upwards of 18 - 20K rpm. on an alt that is prone to failure due to it's location and wires...
Only reason it makes any sense to put a smaller pulley on there is if you have an underdrive pulley and want to bring your amperage back within stock specs. OR if your car is specifically used for SPL drags and you have three other HO alts in there already.
IMHO this is a bad "upgrade" for our cars, unless you fit in the above two mentioned categories.

Makes sense....i guess i will not purchace that "upgrade" cause there isnt enough SPL comps around here for me to even bother with. But o well thanks for the imput:bowdown:

Umm ya im stupid ya smaller is faster.
And what SPL contest lets you keep the car running?

didnt mean it by SPL contest...... just any audio comp in general

dont they always keep the cars running the SPL drags?
i have never been to one but all the videos i have seen had the pedal to the metal to keep the ridiculous rpms up for the alt to put out full juice...
other wise those bass machiens would eat up alts left right and centre...not to mention it would most likely die half way through the competition if the car wasnt running..you would get one wicked sweet bass hit and the rest of the time the car would be trying to recharge..lol..

All the ones I've entered had you keep your car on, but they asked not to rev past 2k.

if they were all the sames as the ones u were in then that thing would seem like it would be great to have

at any rate long term use of this pulley on a stock alt i am certain is not good unless you already have an underdrive pully installed...
i would imagine there would be no adverse effects to a HO alt though...they are designed for higher loads and outputs...our stockies arent....
