View Full Version : Too poor to afford a CAI, would swisscheesing the air box do anything?

I am saving up for a good CAI, but in the meantime i was thinking about swisscheesing the stock air box. Would this make the intake have a throatier sound? Would i notice anything from swisscheesing it? The only thing i am worried about is throwing a CEL from the sensor in the air box. Has anyone done this or heard about it?

I have a better idea.

How about you just wait until you can afford a CAI?

Where'd you get the term swisscheesing? I understand what it means, it just doesn't sound right at all though, lol. You probalbly wouldn't gain much honestly, the stock intake is basically a restrictive cold air intake, you'd just allow hot air in as well. So, unless someone opts to test this on a dyno of sorts (which will never happen), you're better off saving for a cold air. If anything, buy the short ram first then save up money for the extension. ;)

Doesn't transmit heat either!

seriously go do it, dont listen to anyone.

if your intent on getting a CAI in the near future [and you dont plan on ever going back to stock], theres absolutely no harm you can do by swisscheezing the bottom plate of the airbox.

you honestly would get a gain out of it, but its going to be quite small [and kinda getto that most people dont want to encourage]

Just remove the silencer if you want a "throatier" sound, you ricer. :disgust:

Cut the bottom of the airbox. Not the top

Hahahhaha.... Yes i know its sad, but when you are in school you tend to get poor! To answer where i got the "swisscheesing" idea from, it just made sence, you have some holes in your intake, swisscheese has some holes in the block. Hahaha, i know its very ghetto, but i do tend on getting a real CAI, but i just wanted a lil better sounds over stock. I guess i will be the first to to do one on a cougar's stock airbox then!

nope, I'm sure a number of members have done it but are too ashamed to fess up to it.

I did it, and like I said, there are some gains, but its small.

Honestly, you'd see better results by using a K&N drop-in filter. $30 at Wal•Mart.

before there ever was a CAI except i thing cta. I knew several members that used a hacked up airbox.

We've never purchased a CAI for one of our cars....we just build them out of dryer hose and/or PVC. If you take your time it can be done nicely.

If you remove the accordian which connects your stock air box to the fender you will get a louder intake sound.

There is no point however in doing this mod other than sound. (if it where not so cold out you would likely loose hp)

If you cut/remove the lower section of the airbox you will get more flow but once again you are allowing large amounts of hot air to enter the engine and you will loose hp and suffer from heatsoak while the car is stopped.

(I did this exact mod prior to installing an AEM shortram) The AEM shortram was louder and gave more power, but the open stock airbox did allow for a louder intake tone. I however only removed the snorkle...i did not cut away the bottom of the airbox)

Doesnt eBay have like $20 dollar short ram intakes? Thats 10 times better than putting swiss cheese in your stock one, or whatever you meant lol.

But seriously, just save your money to buy something good that you'll see some real gains from.

Yea, prolly like 30 shipped. All you need, a good K&N type filter, maf adapter plate, maybe 8inches of a 3" diameter pipe, small strip of teflon hose. That's all it is.

No. I don't like to refer to rap as music, more so a beat with horrible lyrics, usually only a few lines repeated over and over again, dubbed over the beat.

You guys are suggesting short ram intakes, he wants a CAI, which would consist of a short ram and a CAI extension. Si o no?

Short ram will do... all you need is a CAI extention! 50 bucks or so used! They seem to be very common amoung the forms too! Thank you for the E-bay link for the short ram!

Money is an issue with him, so suggesting a short ram (which is very cheap) for the meantime and then he can buy the cold air 'extension' later. Yup yup. It's better then "swiss-cheesing"
