Apparently a new rule is going into effect at all NHRA sanctioned tracks that for any vehicle equipped with an aftermarket power adder (N20, S/C, Turbo), the driver MUST wear an SFI approved fire jacket! It doesn't matter if you run 16's or not, you have to have a fire jacket!
Not sure if I like the rule or not. I can see the dangers in nitrous, but why for EVERY supercharger and turbo equipped car? I guess this is in case a pack of Asian gangsters jump you at the time shack, riddle your car with bullets, and the car catches on fire with the nitrous (remember, its NAWS, the big ones, you've got two of them, and you just got them tonight!!).
So this is just a heads up to you F/I guys, so you don't get a nasty surprise next time you go to the strip.

Real racing suppliers carry Nomex racing suits.
A jacket only makes no sense to me since your legs, hands, head and neck are all still exposed to the fire.

Not only that, but they've been using power adders since what, the 1960's? Why is there a rule change now? Has there been a sudden increase in fire related deaths in power-adder cars? I mean, is it just me, or is your engine just as likely to catch on fire N/A as it is F/I, assuming you have a correctly installed F/I.
I need to see this in writing before I believe it, and its not because of you bobby, its because it just doesn't really add up.

I know its on Firebird's website as being a new rule, and someone local I talked to said that its an NHRA-wide rule. I haven't found anything formal on that yet, but I'm still looking. The local forum I found it on said its NHRA-wide and that the other NHRA track in Phoenix will impliment it too.
I do know that Snell 90 helmets are no longer legal, and Snell 95 helmets will expire 1/1/07, thats a 100% certain NHRA rule. I'll double check and possibly call the track tomorrow and ask if its a local rule or an NHRA rule. I was told NHRA rule, thats why I posted it here.
actually that would be Cougars, not Cougar's.

The Firebird raceway states it...The NHRA doesn't list it the same way. If I was reading their site properly you have to run a 10:10 to be required to wear protective clothing.
I emailed their tech email address to find out for sure.
Thats the quickest way to find the truth. I'm betting it's track specific

Honestly, they aren't going to check you if you are in a pretty much stock looking cougar. That rule probably came from some asain kid who has his honda boosted to the moon, and when the piston came flying out of the side of the block to smack him in the face for being so stupid, people got scared.

I know that maple grove raceway in pa had this rule for years now. All cars with power adders the driver needs to wear protective clothing no matter what times he or she is running. Also any car running under 13's the driver must wear protective clothing. So this is not really a new thing, maple grove is a nhra certified track.

The email I got from the NHRA tech guy:
Danny,
It depends on ET, fuel, and type of vehicle. It is possible to have nitrous or a turbo and no jacket.

What makes you think its a worthless answer?

Maybe not worthless, but its so vague, y'know? A little more specifics would have been nice, because I still have no idea if I'm gonna need a jacket or not.

BBOX the safest bet I would think is just get the jacket. That way you are already prepared for the rules at any track you go too. Seeing that the tracks have different rules.

Yeah, I priced 'em, they're not too bad. I'm pretty sure I'm gonna need a helmet for me noggin too.

I THINK you'll only need one if you hit a 10:10 ET according to the Nhra. Your local track might be different. for 60.00... its pretty cheap to have one handy just in case
