my girlfriend is having engine issues with her 02 Cougar. We have been to a mechanic that says it will need to be replaced. If it does actually need to be replaced, what kind of options do I have with putting a different type engine in it for under $4000? (preferably a high performance engine of some sort) AND what if it doesn't need to be replaced but can be fixed somehow, how can I tell??
please help and thank you for your time....

go to the 3.0 section (of this board) and READ ALOT before asking questions. But you should easily be able to do a pretty nice 3.0 swap into it for under 4 g's and be at or near 200fwhp

depending on the engine im goin to have to say just stick with the type u have now.......if its the 2.5L and if you can swing it u could go for a 3L hybrid or a full 3L but if its the 2L then well the best thing to do is just replace it...... the problem with doin a engine swap for our cars is that it aint easy or cheap ( at least in my mind ).......im assuming that the $4000 budget is the cost to have a new engine put in ur car and it would cost more to properly do a 3L hybrid ....
if you have the 2.0L zetec you can go to ford racing and look at the engine components that you could but in your engine
the best place to look for info on engine swap info is the 3L section becuase it talks about what fits, the time period for most jobs, and the cost.........

What he said.
++ on the READ A LOT before ASKING part, or you'll have a select few people coming out and calling you an idiot and to USE THE SEARCH. I'm just trying to save you from their grief. ;)
what kinda problems are there with it?

my first inclination would be do a vacuum test on it, proceeded by a compression test. Those two things will tell you alot, and narrow it down.
