View Full Version : BBOX's Dyno Plot!

I decided to just post Ryan's dyno plot up here because I thought everyone should see how nice it is. Here you go:

The horsepower curve is really nice, but the thing I like most is the torque. He's got so much torque anywhere in the curve, which makes it alot more fun to drive than something like a high strung honda.

 Thanks DeWayne. I've been so busy plotting out all the rest of the crap I'm gonna do to the car that I haven't tinkered with it much. But now everyone can see what I'm rolling.

Here is the air fuel chart
http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f334/LoganMotor/AirFuel.jpg
If you look at the air-fuel it's kind of interesting. For example the air-fuel is lean at the beginning of the pull, and that is because the Ford computer doesn't allow open-loop control below 2000 rpm to increase gas mileage. It's not something to worry about, as there is only 6 degrees of timing there. Also, you'll notice that the air-fuel has a jump at 3700 rpm, where the IMRC's engage. I think it's fun to read into the data like that, so what if it makes me a nerd, lol.

Thank you again DeWayne, you're the kind of "nerd" that we need.

Very cool to see what my car is putting down. Excellent work guys!
When is the double extrude hone upper intake coming?

Why is it that the airfuel ratio plots are not smooth like the torque / hp?
I would have expected it to be more consistent than what is shown.
Is it a continous or is there a time gap between each plot on the air fuel?
Also is there any reason that it dips around 5788?
Really cool graphs

Give us more info on the setup and the dyno so we can compare it to the others out there.

well, you have to understand something about air-fuel meters when you look at that graph. An air-fuel meter reads a voltage between .7 and 1.6. It uses 1 volt to signify 14.64:1 air-fuel (which is stoichiometric, or ideal). So an air-fuel of 12.5:1 is .854 volts (12.5/14.64=.854). So as you can see the difference between an air-fuel of 12.5 and 12 is only .3 volts. That is small, and electric devices aren't perfect, so you get slight variations in readings that can't be avoided. When you see air-fuel graphs that are really flat and smooth, it's because the dyno that they use creates a graph based on the trend, not the actual data. We can do that too, but we choose to use real raw data in all of our findings. That pull on his car was only 9.5 seconds, yet we had 298 air-fuel data points, which shows that our sampling rate is pretty high. The biggest reason for using a trend graph instead of raw data is that sometimes it makes tuning easier because the raw data will sometimes fool you with outliers.
As for the air-fuel going rich at higher RPM, that is on purpose. Those engines seem to want to be more rich at high RPM because the timing curve gets erratic if it's not. That is a little secret many tuners do not know, or just haven't taken the time to figure out. If you'll notice his horsepower hangs on till a very high RPM, and that is part of the reason.
I hope that helps!

DeWayne, thanks for posting all that golden info.
I'm sure you'll be seeing a number of cougars in the future [including myself]

No problem man, I'm looking forward to seeing more cougars myself. You guys should check out our website www.loganmotorsports.com . In the pictures section you'll notice at the bottom I added Ryan's cougar to the list, and if you click on it it shows some information about the car. I'm still working on it, and I'd like to have a dyno plot up there with every car eventually. I should have Jason's car up there by tonight as well. Let me know what you guys think!

Sa-weet! Thats awesome DeWayne, thanks man!
I've still got a couple of N/A tricks up my sleeve . . . and then some. Watch for future dyno plots.

Can you guys lower the IMRC opening point? It looks like the IMRC is opening past the 3500 rpm mark.
Logan Motorsports
01-20-2006, 06:57 PM
Yea, we can mess with the IMRC opening point. You want the IMRC's to open where the torque curves cross, that is the the torque curve of the IMRC closed and the torque curve of the IMRC open.
Rikenbomb
01-20-2006, 07:06 PM
Well if the IMRC were to open sooner, say 3200- 3300 rpms, he'll have that much power (torque) to work with.
I know DemonSVT usually preaches to get the IMRC open at a lower rpm range.
Obviously there has to be a trade off between gasmilage/normal driving to running it hard.
Logan Motorsports
01-20-2006, 07:15 PM
Really the only way to find the perfect opening point is to make one full dyno pull with the IMRC's closed the entire run and then make a pull with the IMRC's open the entire run. Wherever the graphs cross would be the perfect point. We'll take care of that when he returns for his nitrous tuning :)

Of course, if LMS has their own 3L Cougar to tinker with they could have a decent ballpark figure of what it should open at. ;)
