View Full Version : Cougarfest 2006 Planning

Judging from the other thread there is some (warranted) concern over this years event. Rest assured we are currently discussing dates. HIN and Nascar events are held around our time so we want to make sure we don't conflict. We are still planning on having drag and definately AutoX but may have a shorter time for drag and ask the SCCA to host the AutoX to help bring down prices this year. Our primary concern right now is getting a date so everyone can ask for time off well in advance. We will be holding it in Indy again this year since it seems to be working well (and we have access to a track and a very understanding hotel with what they say is a positive history  ).
Please post constructive suggestions below, PM me directly if you have any bones to pick about the extremely preliminary information above.
Please also keep in mind everyone has their own Cougarfest vision of what should happen, but we all include the standard items of parking lot and hotel room parties which will happen no matter what agenda items are included/not included.
Looking forward to seeing you all again this year!

Got dyno? I've got the contact information of a shop near Chicago which has tuned two of the 3L's on this board and has expressed a great deal of interest in newcougar.org. They have already offered to host a local meet on site in the springtime, but lo-and-behold, they have a portable dyno, and I think they would be interested in heading out to Indy with us. If you are interested in contacting them, I have sent a PM to EternalOne about them and also have their contact information myself.

No bones to pick over here... I talked to John earlier, him and I seem to have the exact same opinions on everything, so between him and yourself Brad, I know we are in good hands, since the rest of the committee seems to have dissapeared.

I'm with Canadian on this one . . . we could honestly skip the track, the autox, the shine n show, the dyno, and just turn the hotel into a 72 hour nonstop drunken rampage and I would be in. I'm just looking forward to meeing to many of the people I've talked to on here. Our Illinois meet this past Saturday had about 30 individuals there give or take, and it was fun, and all we did was go to friggin Gameworks.
Just get everyone together. All the rest is bonus from my perspective.

You know actually having this event the weekend before or after HIN would be pretty sweet. So long as we get our rooms everything should be straight.
I wouldnt mind entering my cougar into HIN. I am sure there are a number of other members who wouldnt mind either.
I know HIN has its own entry fee and such, but its a thought.
I definitly want to stay FAR away from the NASCAR crowd.
Having a dyno and a AutoX event will rock. AutoX is a ton of fun.

i would really rather have the autox instead of the drag myself. You can only go straight so many times and not get a whole lot of improvement. With autox there is sooooo much more room for improvement, and it is more situated for our cars anyway. If the Indy SCCA isnt available i could talk with my region to use our stuff if there isnt a local event. Im sure our safty stewards would like to come along to work is as long as we let them run too. I might even be a safty steward by then too:biggrin:

Ok, NASCAR (Sprint and Busch) is 8/5/06 - 8/6/06, and HIN is 6/17/06, so those weekends are out. That pretty much leaves the last weekend in June and all of July open so far, if anyone knows of other events in Indy, please speak up, then its just up to when the track/hotel is free and we can set dates. =)
As with last year the SPL competition will be returning. I am hoping to purchase a small leaderboard before fest, so I can display the scores instead of screaming them out to everyone. :P So start tweaking those systems now. I expect Nutty to make his rearview mirror fall off again!
How are you doing on money without the raffles? Do we need to have a carwash? lol
That's a good question. But, I have a few tricks up my sleeves yet...and I've already started making phone calls. Any ideas for funding would help tho, of course...

Indy sounds fine again to me. The hotel is really cool, and the city is pretty easy to get around and do stuff in, to me anyways.
I think...like BBOX said in the other thread...there should if at all possible be a dyno at the track or something. That would be awesome! ;)

Lets shoot for the 2nd to last weekend in July (20-23) id like that better then the last weekend in July.
I think a dyno would be cool. But honestly, its gonna be expensive, and it would be pointless to see 170-250 hp pulls all day long... Not worth it if u ask me.

One thing that has sucked in previous fests, is that everyone splits up to do their own thing... and only serious hanging out has happend on saturday night... the last night.
this year should be about hanging out as a group as much as possible, with the people you only see once a year... so like, don't reserve the drag track for 10 hours... make it a half day thing - after 7 or 8 runs, you KNOW what your car can do.
i've never seen an AutoX event, so thats where I will be this year, but its hot out in that thar sun! If costs are an issue, I would say make them half day... drag in the morning, then autox in the afternoon?? (or vice versa) that gives people the opportunity to go to both as either a spectator, or participant.
also, having water available outside was an excellent touch. garbage cans are obviously just as important.
Maybe some kind of hotdog / hamburger vendor could be hired for the event too? then we have food on site.
i'm just throwing these ideas out there... since its better to have too many than too few.
but does anything that i've said stir up any thoughts?

I also like that AM drag/PM Auto-X thing. I'd like to do both, so that would make it very good.
I've never been to a Fest before, so I don't have anything to compare it to, so please pardon anything I overlook.
I also like the idea of hanging out TOGETHER as much as possible. If we get enough of us caravaning around town, maybe we could work with local authorities (a la CF2004, that was f***ing awesome video someone shot of 30+ Cougar's all pulling out at once with Police roadblock).
Also, are we looking at a Thurs-Sun schedule again? I'm probably gonna need about a week off work to allot for travel time to and from AZ. I'll most likely use backup drivers (bring a couple friends) to make it easier, lol.
What are we looking at for fundraising, now that raffles are off limits? Possibly have each individual chapter do some sort of smaller fundraising, with all the chapters together we could probably raise a good amount of money? Just something like carwashes or something should make some money. Any more details on the fundraising aspect of how this is gonna happen?
azbobbybooshay10
01-17-2006, 08:55 AM
If things work out and the Big Kahuna's let me be Co-Mod of AZ NECO, keep me in the loop on anything I can do with our chapter to help raise money. I'll be glad to help in any way possible! Hell, I can probably do some anyways, but it might give me a little more leverage on local places to help raise funds from.
For us locally, I may be able to get some sort of donation thru my work, as long as the AZ guys sport some kind of Speedway ad or sticker or something (I'd make it so it comes back off easy, but if its money going towards fest, I'd sport a Speedway sticker for a week or so!). Lets get some sort of cash flow established early on!

I like the idea of having various chapters donate money to help offset the costs. If any chapters would like to organize their own fundraisers for fest, that would most definately help. I talked with Brad a bit last nite about getting some other funding (that was never explored in previous years), but I want to make sure that by doing this I don't ruin the fun of CF. I would fund CF myself before I turned the event into a corporate free-for-all, so don't worry there. ;) I am hoping to get more donations in the way of goods, however, so that we can continue the giveaways at the event.
About trophies... Matt and I discussed this quite a bit, and a good group of us had a discussion about them at Hamilfest as well. The overall conscience seemed to be that the trophies actually took AWAY from the event, especially with the shaky way the judging was handled. The ideas we came away with boiled down to:
- Keep the trophies the same, just fix the the judging and/or clearly define the classes
- Eliminate the trophies totally, the event is more about the people than the cars any more.
- Only give trophies for quantifiable items. (Fastest 1/4, Fastest AutoX, Highest SPL, Highest HP, Highest TQ)
I really like the last idea, where trophies are only given to something we can prove via numbers. Then, I'd like to see a "Best of Show" at least, since that's something we could setup peer-voting on. If you have a Cougar, you get a vote, highest votes wins, much easier. ;) I also think we need to take the trophies WITH US, forget about engraving the name on the trophy, get them premade and hand them out AT FEST. The trophy issues from last year are simply stupid, and should never had been drawn out this far.
What do ya'll think?

I think it would be cool if you kept the various classes and cleaned up the judging, just my $.02. Also, for quantifiable things, you may want to break it down by N/A and F/I, because there's clearly no point in a N/A Cougar trying to compete with an F/I Cougar.
I also like your idea on the trophies.

N/A and F/I classes do make sense. If we went with fewer classes like this, we could also break them down further:
2.5 N/A
2.5 F/I
3.0 N/A
3.0 F/I
But the only problem there are "shoe-in's". If only one F/I 3.0 shows up, they would instantly get a trophy. ;) (Of course, I think this year is going to be the first year where we have all 4 of those classes covered because of the # of new 3.0's and Turbo's we've seen installed this year.)

yeah, cougarfest really isn't about competition... so I'm very much against traditional awards at the event... we are all friends for the most part, and at the show to hang out and be merry. Save the competition stuff for actual carshows where thats the whole purpose.
We only get one weekend a year for this show, drama and trophies ruin can ruin it.
Awards for the track are acceptable because you can put a number to it, same with spl.
the 'fun' awards would be great too... add a bit of light hearted humor to the whole deal... biggest bug found in the grill would be hillarious.

I dont want come off as condescending or bashing the organization in anyway, but I feel that since Ive been to three Cougarfests already and possibly a fourth, I do have some say so. To be completely honest, INDY sucks. Ive been twice already for the past fests, and Id rather drive to VA Beach than Indy. The roads suck in Indy, theres really nothing around there unless you go downtown, and I honestly think the turn out is going to be less this year since people are getting a little tired of driving 14+ hours to see the same place. I understand that fact that I go for many other reasons than the location, but a different location would be an awesome change, even though the events arent as exstravagant.
But that's just my 2 cents.

Lot's of cities have great hotels, big parking lots, and tracks nearby.
I've never been to a Cougarfest, or to Indy, so I could personally not care either way, but I've heard and talked to a lot of people that just want to go somewhere different instead of back to the Indy for the third time. After 2 fests at Indy, the only negative I have, is that besides the Zoo (which sucked) there's nothing else to do. So, if you wanted to see something for an afternoon besides cougars and drunk people, there's nothing else to see. Thats honestly what I was thinking as well. I've only heard bits and pieces about it, but it seems like there hasn't been a big effort to get this thing going until the last couple days or so.
I think, for simplicity's sake, we should just go with Indy again this year with the understanding other options will be explored for the following year's Fest.
Also, while I've never been to one, I really thought CougarFest was about getting together the enthusiasts who drive (or used to drive) them. In other words, its about the people. Its just my opinion, but anyone who would decide to attend or not attend based solely on location, kinda sucks at life.

How would people feel about doing traditional trophies for the quantifiable awards (those you can put a hard number to), and then having a bunch of funny trophies for the fun stuff? Matt had a great idea for my spare 2.5L -- I could disassemble the engine piece by piece, take the various "cool parts" and powdercoat them, then use the CNC to etch in what the trophy is for. I could pull all that off on my spare time at the shop, and it wouldn't cost a dime since I have no use for a dying 2.5L with over 120k miles on it. :D

I like the idea of custom made trophies - made out of engine parts (piston/con rods, etc).
I think measureable/definitive trophies are good - to a point. I, for one, will not be pushing my daily driver hard enough to risk breaking it hundreds of miles from home. Call me a wimp, if you must, but consider that some will be there just for fun, not to drive hard.
I think there really should be at least 3 peer-judged trophies: Stock, Mild Custom, Wild Custom. As John said: 1 Cougar = 1 Vote per class. Possibly 2nd place, maybe 3rd in each category. Owners would have to declare participation, and helped to declare which class and be given the opportunity to point out highlights on a paper or card. I was very surprised - and disappointed - last year when i discovered the judging was not peer judged. I really wanted to place votes. This isn't a concours event ;)
I do also like the idea of fun trophies: farthest attendee, farthest Cougar, hardest luck, and so on.
I think a mixture of these would be great - I do not think limiting trophies to any single one of those categories would be good - mix it up and share the wealth all around - everyone should have a shot at something.
Extra things to do, as Matt mentions, would require a bit more organization and planning, but goes far to build cameraderie - rather than just strolling in the sun, or sitting inside. Do some things as a group so those of us that aren't quite in the "in crowd" can do more with everyone. Maybe you will meet NEW friends!
my 2 cents - I probably have a couple more cents if anyone is interested...

Fun trophies are a good idea, however, as I was an integral part of the initial discussion at Hamillfest about deleting them, I think that based on the fact that we are there more for friendship and a social event that I'd much rather see the money that would have been spent on trophies go towards the expense of fest itself. We all know what we all have since we don't hide it from eachother and share our modding successes on the boards. Bragging rights are cool and all but so is a cheaper event. It could help bring the cost down more if we scrap the trophies or just maybe a few trophies for big hitters instead of all the track categories. CF is getting more and more expensive each year. I'm also in for the fundraising topic... in fact, Brad / John, let's make that an official topic of discussion this Saturday at our MC-NECO dinner meeting.

Information to publish... I am making a raffle donation to Cougarfest 2006!
For those who don't know, I am in the process of manufacturing a documented installation kit for my time honored "Excelcier Headlight Flasher" circuit.
http://excelcier.com/flasher.htm
These kits will be available for purchase in the next couple months. Full details in this thread...
http://www.newcougar.org/forums/showthread.php?t=87967
I will most likely be bringing some to Fest as well to sell and help with installations. I want an army of flashing headlights at FEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not like the idea of speed only tropheys.. what about the cougar owners that arnt going for speed? what about the owners that have spend thousands of dollers to make their cougar look amazing. Now they dont get any love? i dont like that idea at all.

this is why I say NAY to trophies...
if there are any, they should be the fun ones, where everyone from Bobby to Brad has a chance to win ;)
plus Ron's right - unless John can machine the things himself, trophies seem to do two things: cost money, and cause drama... two things we dont want.

OMG, there was so much drama last year because of those stupid trophey's. Trophey's I might add, that nobody even HAVE yet!

I like the idea of trophey's . . . but I wanna beat someone upside the head for getting *****y over them. ITS A FRIGGIN TROPHY! If the subjective trophy's really caused that much drama, maybe we would be better off without them.

What drama was caused by the tropheys?

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say its because its January 18th and no one has theirs from almost 6 months ago?

Nope... that's the aftereffect, not the drama. The drama was AT fest.

back on topic though:
We are still planning on having drag and definately AutoX but may have a shorter time for drag and ask the SCCA to host the AutoX to help bring down prices this year. Our primary concern right now is getting a date so everyone can ask for time off well in advance.
I fully agree with this statement, and any time is fine with me at the moment :)

As for the trophies drama or lack thereof.
IIRC it was judged by 3 non cougar owning people and 1 cougar owning person(ME)
and like I said at Fest if you weren't there i'll paraphrase it.
"It was the worst thing I've ever had to do, and I never wish it on anyone."
its ungodly hard to judge your peers without being judged for
your judging ability.
The Judging was independant meaning all judges worked independantly.
although we did collectively speak to determine a cars "class"
Anyway, if you have complaints about the judging bring it to me.
I'm no pro, but hey I got a trophy once... at NOPI Nats.. LOL so that makes
me qualified...(ok not really qualified)
If you have complaints about the trophies... I don't know anything about them. sorry

Eric, my problems with the way things were judged last year is in no way a reflection on you personally. I think the whole thing seemed to be thrown together at the last minute. (Remember when ya'll came and grabbed me to help judge at the last minute?)
I think that a little simple organization goes a long way in something like that. And putting the judging on one or two people (especially ppl who don't know what to look for in a Cougar) really throws things off. Clearly defined classes and peer voting fixes a LOT of the drama issues, although there will always be those people who win because they are "popular" in a peer voting system -- I don't think that'd be as bad of an issue with our group. I mean, for the most part everyone knows 1 or 2 Cougar's that should win each class (although there are a few suprises every year, like Hotcat's car last year...WOW).
We're going to have another discussion about this Saturday at our MC Neco gathering. Might even conference in a few ppl -- considering the # of bluetooth enabled phones MC Neco comes equiped with. ;) We'll take this entire thread into consideration, and then have a discussion about it together so we can make a decision.
