What is the best method (Other than going to a body shop :) ) for removing "oops" paint from the side of the car?

Yellow paint from one of those concrete posts in a parking lot thanks to being stuck in the snow last winter. Finally tired of it, and want to try to remove the yellow paint without making the damage worse. I can scrape the yellow off with my fingernail in at least some places.

Buffer with compound? What kind of compound? Something else?

Any help or pointers to how-tos would be great. Thanks.

a detail shop might be able to do something for ya. they'd be cheaper than a body shop. it wouldn't hurt to go ask, or call.

that concrete post paint isnt laquer base like car paint, so you could use paint thinner to remove the yellow without damage to your cars paint. then jsut make sure you wax it back up to protect it because the paint thinner will eat the wax off.
make sure to use paint thinner and not laquer thinner, laquer thinner will eat the car paint.

I didn't think of that, he makes a good point. That's probably a safe bet to take car of it.

You could try this. (http://newcougar.org/forums/showthread.php?t=86836) That should get rid of all the paint as well as fix most of the damage underneath.

Bringing an oldie back to the top. I finally took the opportunity to work on the paint on the car door. Cotton balls, mineral spirits, and mucho elbow grease completely removed the yellow and white paint left by the parking lot post. Scratch-X took care of the minor damage to the clear coat, but it will require more work (like the link BMac provided) to remove the heavier scratches.

Good news is the yellow paint is gone, there was no added damage during removal, and it looks like with some TLC and a buffer it'll be OK.

Thanks for the help guys :)

I uh kinda hit a yellow fire-hydrant with my black Ranger in 03. Laquer thinner did the trick quite nicely.

Good to see that you took care of it!

Car paint hasn't been lacquer based for a long time, dude. :)
