View Full Version : Torsen T-2 Question...

I will be getting the Torsen T-2 within the next 2 months and I know it says that ADC presses the gears on and its ready to go, but does the Torsen still need to be shimmed like the Quaife, or is it truely a Drop-in replacement for our crappy diffs???
I am acquiring an 01 tranny with bad spider gears, so I will have it cracked open anyway, if I can just drop the Torsen in and replace the bad spiders, I should be good to go!

No differentials are drop in, ADC won't press the stuff on for you either, you have to get the shim/bearing kit and shim everything properly for the install. If you are mechanically inclined, which it seems you are since you are gonna install it yourself, you whould be able to do the work yourself if you have the right tools. (hint: you can put the dif in the freezer and the bearings and ring gear in a 350*oven to help the pressing process)

Obviously you haven't bought a Torsen from ADC, cause i got one from there...and mine came ready to drop in. So i dropped it in over 2 years ago, and haven't had a problem with it since!

Really, I stand corrected. I have never seen a dif that could be just dropped in and I have been told the same, specifically about the Torsen. Apparently I have been misinformed. I may have to go buy one then:biggrin: Thanks, looks like you have helped more than just aircougar out:thumbsup:

I thought the Quaife diff was better with the 2:1 ratio as the Torsen has a 3:1. But for 725.00 for it all ready to drop in, to me its worth it to get the Torsen.

Wrong again...the higher the ratio= the better.
This would make the Torsent the better diff. as far as torque biasing goes.

So if someone had to choose the Torsen is the better Diff to get?

Well there really are only a couple differences...
1) Torsen has a better torque bias ratio
2)Torsen "can be" dropped right in VS. Quaife must have a shim kit
3)Quaife comes with a lifetime warranty...but really this doesn't matter as noone with a Cougar/Contour has ever broken either of them!
4)Torsen is slightly cheaper from most places i think.
Personally when i put in the Torsen the only things i really looked at was the availability to get it with the stuff already pressed on, and the fact that it didn't "need" a shim kit. I didn't care about the warranty cause like i already said...noone has broken one to date. And of course it was cheaper.

Thanks for the point by point comparison.

or you could just get a whole new tranny beefed up from terry haines for $2500 and let him worry about doing all the work (just my stand on this from a non-mechanically inclined persons point of view)

Hold on to your panties! Save your money! and buy the Torsen...
They have the 3:1 bias ratio and they install fairly easy. You don't need the shims either.
Purchase the diff, bearings (2) and the Speedo gear. I took it to my shop on base and had it pressed on for free (takes about 10 minutes) I split the tranny open and took the stock one out and dropped the torsen right in.
Perfect fit! A lot cheeper! and a lifetime warrenty!

i had to shim mine when i put the torsen in. the shim allows proper bearing preload. with the stock shims the preload was so tight i couldnt turn the input shaft by hand. those the didnt shim either got lucky or have improper preload which could lead to early bearing failure or not. its a gamble either way. they are more drop in than rear diffs because there is no backlash adjustment on a cougar fwd tranny. also the torsen is a complete carrier replacement so there will be no need to replace you spider gears because the torsen does away with the stock diff carrier, thus leavung your vehicle without spider gears.
also i got mine from ford racing for 543.50 shipped, but it took 4 months to get it.

Where is the absolute best place to get the torsen from? I think, that along with my extrude hone I might have found another good use for my tax return.

Will it come with pre-pressed speedo gears and the sensor installed, like ADC does for you?
I will be getting one from them, but if you can get a WAY better deal and save me some $$$, then hook me up!!!
I am looking to buy within 2-3 weeks...

Wake Performance has them for $525 + $23 shipping.
Torsen LSD (http://wakeperformance.com/product_info.php/products_id/353)
You just need to buy the rest of the stuff from Bat and get it pressed together.
