View Full Version : Stock C2 vs 2 wannabe neons

It all started with a nice, easy 15.5 hours drive back fron Denver to Yuma. (We did it in under 13, but that's besides the point. ) We were on the final stretch after Pheonix, past a little town called Gila Bend on I-8. Me and Resa were cruising around 85-90, with around 200 pounds worth of clothes and random Christmas crap in the back. I had let Resa drive, I had been driving the previous 10 hours. I was even telling her to take it easy, it seemed to knock a little just at 4k rpms at 3/4 throttle.

Anyways, we were cruising along when a white neon (not srt, just a basic neon) in a crappy, nasty kit with enough guages and lights to tell a space shuttle more than enough info rolled by us at roughly 100. We noticed a newer silver neon (again, basic) with black stripes running close on his ass with his lights off. Both cars were modded a little, and not just a rattle-can. They had a little bit of spunk. I thought nothing of it and tried to go back to sleep, but Resa let them roll by, then dropped the C2 into 4th and floored it. We hit 110 pretty quick, then popped it back into 5th. We had to be over 125 by the time we shot past them.

We slowed back down and they crept up on us. They each took turns trying to pull on us from roughly 80-85 to whenever they crapped out. Neither one could keep up. We kept this up for about 20 miles, then it looked like they stopped to drag each other on the highway (I never said they were smart  ).

Since then, I've seen both cars rolling on base, and I can't wait for the chance for a rematch with just me in the car, and no extra weight!!!

Nice kills on the Neons! I've seen a couple of those things with basic
bolt-ons running 14.9's. There's one in Ohio with a built bottom end
running 12.9 and 125 shot I believe.

I say at the next Cougar Fest we have a wives/girlfriends race.
5.0 vs 3.5L Altima:biggrin:

I dunno, Resa paired up with a 5.0 is kinda stacking the odds. She used to race in Detroit in her '86 Supercharged MR2... yeah. That thing's got the cajones to make Crown Vics bow out, ESPECIALLY if they start getting twisty and fast.

What does she have done to it? Any 1/4 times in it? 5.0 is stock form is pretty damn week
180-190 to the wheels on a dyno. Altima=250 at the crank

It's as stock as a dirty Mexican will let it be... it's stock. That thing is nowhere NEAR 180-190. More like 300. Even if I'm wrong, that girl can DRIVE. You get her in "race mode" and things get scary FAST!!!

is it the altima with the 350z engine?...theres on in my family and i think it would keep up with or beat a 5L.....and theres only so much a drivers skill can do against a faster car on the 1/4...not saying she aint bad......

Aeglos

If the power and gear ratios are close, then it's totally a skill race.

I consider myself to be a pretty good driver, but she can outdrive me in my own car and she's only driven it a grand total of 5 times. I guess how you were raised has a lot to do with it.

I gues we'll just have to wait until I'm not deployed and can get to a CougarFest and find out.

You know you can't hate me I gave you a great christmas and wedding present. where else can you get a full GMK for the cost of shipping

Aeglos

This is very true. Well, it all works out for the best, GMK is getting installation pics out of it when I get to it next weekend. I still owe you to some degree, getting a $180 custom-made CAI for just shipping... just seems wrong somehow.

I just got another cool wedding present. My new mother-in-law bought me the full katana/washabi/tanto sword set from The Last Samurai. They're gorgeous.

We were talking to the owner of the hotel Resa is staying at, the fugger has been studying slot machines and has them down to a science. He claimed to have made over $570k this last year on slots alone. She hit me when I suggested using that as our way of getting all out dream cars.

Darkhorse145
01-06-2006, 03:37 AM
Slots are iffy to me I have made some money on them but there isn't any skill in it unless you are a lurker, poker on the other hand and BJ if you can count cards is simple. I have heard of people banking off slots though but most of the time they are lurkers.

Aeglos
01-06-2006, 03:57 AM
Yeah, he was DEFINITELY a lurker.

C69
01-06-2006, 06:57 AM
I wouldn't mind being called a lurker if I made that much.;)

1986 Mustang GT had the first EFI 5.0 and was rated at 200bhp.

Hey gyger, since I don't have a girlfriend or a wife, I'll let my mother drive my Mustang against the Altima. Deal?

ugh...
Just have her take it to a track and see what it runs...you won't
be impressed. A stock 20 yr old 5.0 isn't gonna be very quick.

Yeah sure that makes about as much sense as you racing
me in one of your cougars....

is it the altima with the 350z engine?...theres on in my family and i think it would keep up with or beat a 5L.....and theres only so much a drivers skill can do against a faster car on the 1/4...not saying she aint bad......

when did 350z's get fast? i beat one in my Zn and all thats done to it is and intake and gutted cat.

they weight something like 4200 pounds ok maybe not that much but its some insane weight. im pretty sure cougars power to weight ratio is better so....im not sure tho

as for the neon thing, did you expect to lose to them.....theres a kid around here driving a 96 or some crap always running his mouth about how it runs like 11's but he'll never race me because he says he cant get pulled over anymore. im learning quickly that people who talk alot of trash with their cars are the people who go to autozone and call themselves "tuners"

I think it was the day they came out.
And they'll damn sure destroy a stock or lightly modded Cougar.
here are the specs
Power: 287 HP SAE @ 6,200 rpm; 274 ft lb , 371 Nm @ 4,800 rpm
Weights: curb weight (lbs) 3,212

So it has 100+ more crank HP than the Cougar and weighs maybe
100lbs more. If you beat a 350z he probably wasn't racing you.

I'll put it like this I have all bolt-ons on my Coug it put down 172FWHP
I raced my wife's Altima with her driving and my Dad in it as a passenger
and I pulled at first but she walked right by me. After we stopped she
says it wasn't to the floor. So if my car and your car can't beat a 3.5L
Altima there is no way you are beating a 350Z with the same engine but
tuned for 28 more HP.;)

If you don't believe it down load the movie. http://www.domesticcompact.com/movies/cougVSaltima.wmv

i dont know dude, this was a guy who always talked **** at work and i finally raced him so maybe he was just a crap driver.

i found these to sites with specs but the weight on the one is in pounds and the other is in kg i wasnt sure how to convert it. according to this the 350z is only 240horse or somthing? i dont know but take a look anyways.

He must really not have known how to drive!
yeah the curb weight from your site is 3,197 (pretty much what I said)
and the HP listed proves my point even more.
Claimed Crank Hp: 287 hp @ 6200 rpm
Claimed Crank Torque: 274 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm
Measured Wheel Hp: 249 hp @ 6300 rpm
Measured Wheel Torque: 240 lb-ft @ 4800 rpm
THAT'S 249 WHEEL HP...to the wheels not the crank. To the
crank it has exactly what I stated in the above post.
So inconclusion the STOCK 350Z has 249RWHP and I would say your
Cougar has maybe 155FWHP.....No contest sorry man.

Cougar 170 HP to the crank
350Z 287 HP to the crank
You can not dispute these numbers they are facts. Stock against stock
the Cougar would take a horrible thrashing and lose by a bus length.

no, i wasnt trying to prove you wrong, i jus twasnt sure of those numbers. and based on the way this guy did everything else at work, i wouldnt doubt if he was a really bad driver
