I know that Nitrous is not flamable but If you were to get in an accident and the tank was hit would it explode?

im not an expert, but if the impact was hard enough to cuase enough of a rupture in the tank there might be from the gases expanding.....also i have heard of the tanks cuasing fires and actual explosions...now if its true or not .....im basing my answer on the fact that its a gas thats compressed in the containter.......

Yes the bottle can burst causing severe damage.

There are some good (actually bad) pictures of a car that had the bottle heater stay on and the heated bottle pressure was enough to destroy the entire car, garage, and 2 rooms above the garage. The car did not look like a car. It looked like an empty tuna can.

So yes if the bottle broke, even at unheated pressure, it would do considerable damage.

Okay let me dispell some concerns.

First, the actual explosion on the Maxima that DemonSVT is reffering to was due to a faulty blow off cap on the bottle that failed to do its job. Most bottle heaters that are available are thermostat controlled. Which means when it hits the temp that it is supposed to, the heater shuts off. Other bottle heaters are regulated through pressure, however most dont have these because they are much more expensive. The guy in question filed a lawsuit against NX because of the faulty bottle, but Im not too sure what happened after that.

Now onto the bottle causing an explosion during an accident. The strength of a nitrous bottle during an accident should probably be one of the least of your worries. You may wonder why I say this. If the bottle was purchased through Zex, NX, or any legit manufacturer of Nitrous systems, then the bottle is DOT legal. In a rear end collision you need to worry about your bracket system. If youve got your bottle held in by a few screws, where do you think that bottle is going to come flying when the screws are ripped out from where they are drilled in. I have never heard of a bottle breaking during an accident, and honestly I think Fast and the Furious comes to mind when you think of a bottle exploding.

Just remember, if a group of asian thugs shoot up your car and you have nitrous in the back... RUN and shout NAWWWWWWS to warn the people around you.

thanks for clearing things up nemisis...like i said i was just basing my answer on the fact that its compressed gas in the tank, and wen i was thinking of a rear end collision i was thiinkin wen there is no rear end left..

side not: on a show called mythbusters they proved that a scuba tank will not explode by being shot...so thats also a basis for an answer i guess
