...but turns out, it's just me :banghead: Is there a sign attached somewhere that says please hit? The Xterra got rear ended last nite. There is concern whether there is damage to the frame due to the leaf springs bending so much and the body being pushed up at least 6". Any truck guys want to jump in and offer an opinion? I linked the Xterra guys too.

Thing is, is when the Cougar got hit on the highway, it pushed it which messed up the suspension. When I traded it in, it had literally a brand new suspension on it and it was still never right. I just don't want to deal with that all over again.

I can't believe it, I feel so sorry for you. Was it a hit and skip in a parking lot or did you get information and everything?
With out looking at it personally It's tough to say if the frame is damaged or just the leafspring mounts. But yeah it's deffinetly more then just cosmetic.
Remember it is a truck so things are generally stronger then anything on the Cougar.
You've been hit more then Saddams palaces in Baghdad:banghead:

Sorry to hear about your luck, Diane.
So what happened? Did they hit a patch of ice or where they not paying attention or something?

We were on a 4-lane road. The police were coming down the road with sirens and I was in the left lane so I stopped. The guy said he was in the right lane and the woman stopped in front of him and he didn't know why so he got left and that's where I was. He said he didn't even know there were sirens. He's admitted to everything so that's taken care of.

D@mn Diane :banghead: Really sorry to hear that! :(
Is the Xterra body-on-frame, or uni-body? Looks like body-on-frame from the pics you posted, but I can't tell for sure. If so, you're much more likely to get a good repair than uni-body. Looks like he plowed under the bumper and hit the rear suspension directly. Good luck with the insurance company and any repairs.
(The suspension damage was why they totaled out my first Coug, adjustor said it could be repaired, but with the suspension damage I'd be back complaining about it in six months anyway.)

That sucks. I hope you don't get screwed if it gets totaled. Because more then likely you probably owe more then its worth at the moment. Either that, or I hope you got the "gap" insurance on your loan. Hope everything works out.

You have a frame so that's a plus.
Your rear spring set up works like this you have a hanger that comes out
about 6" or more fromt the frame then a shackle that moves back and forth
that's where the eye of the leaf spring attaches. None of these parts are
made to receive direct contact only push and pull. It looks like the other
car hit your shackle. That could cause some frame damage but I wouldn't
think very much if any. If the hanger and shackle got bent it would explain
why your lifted on one side and not the other.
really sorry to hear this happened Diane:(
EDIT* Actually I can't really tell but it looks likes your shackle/hanger
assembly is the front of the rear spring. So maybe the rear hanger
just got bent.

So you're saying that it would be an easy fix? No problems down the road?

Like Jeff said I would need to see it. But I bent my shackle and basically
you replace the shackle $30-80.00 buy a urethane bushing kit $35 and a new
Grade 8 bolt with washers and nut $5. Support the truck by it's frame
cut the old shackle and bolt off install new done.
If the rear mount on that spring does not pivot back and forth than
it would just be a matter of removing the old bent mount and making
sure there is no frame damage and then installing a new spring
mount ($80-$150 parts)
And after all the rear suspension and attaching parts are checked
and or replaced I would see no reason why there would be any other
problems down the road. Maybe check to make sure that the driveshaft
didn't bind up and crack a u-joint or yoke when you got hit (if the axle
moved forward).
How fast did she hit you?

Also frames can be straightened pretty accuratly (if needed) were a unibody is not so easily straightened. What I'm saying is you have a much better chance of having no problems after the work is done on a truck like that then in a car or unibody structure with similar damage.

Thanks everybody. I'm ok and insurance will take care of everything. I'm just concerned that I seem to be accident prone. Enterprise has me in their system from renting so many cars.
