"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caeser Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David: ) To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.
And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delievered. And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room in the inn." (Luke 2:1-7; KJV)
And the reason we have the holiday of Christmas, to celebrate the lowly birth of the Saviour of the World, God-in-the-flesh, Jesus the Christ. If this historical event had never taken place, we would not have Christmas. Indeed, the world as we know it would not be the same, for this one man changed the course of history for all time.
I would like everyone to remember this year why we celebrate this holiday, whether you are Christian or not, for if you are not Christian, why would you celebrate Christmas? But that's beside the point. Everyone have a safe, and joyous Christmas day, and may sometime during the day you would remember what the real Gift on Christmas is: that God sent His only Son to be born a man to die for the sins of all the world.
Merry Christmas, one and all.

for those courious about Hanukkah....
The story begins during the reign of Alenander the Great. He allowed the lands he conquered to contniue to observe their own religions and retain a degree of autonomy. Under this rule, many Jews adopted much of the Greek culture (well.. Hellenistic technically), inculding the lnguage, customs, and dress.
Over a century later, Antiochus was in control of the region (Palistine). He began a heavy oppression of the Jews, prohibiting the practice of the Jewish religion and desecrating the Temple by sacrificing a pig (known as the Abomination of Desolation). Antiochus was opposed by two groups, a nationalist group led by the Maccabees, and a religious group. After a successful revolt, the Temple was redidicated.
Durnig the time of rededication, there was very little oil left that was not defilied by the Greeks. Oil was needed for the menorah in the Temple, which was to burn throughout the night, every night. There was only enough oil for 1 night, but, miraculously, it burned for 8 days, the time needed to preparh a fresh supply of oil. An 8-day festibal was declared to celebrate this miricle.
So for Joe, and another Jews out there... Happy Hanukkah.
