First off... yes I recognize that the stock are 5x7... so yes I've upgraded to 6x9's
Right now I just have some pioneer 3 ways that hook into stock car wiring, but I'd like to get something a little nicer and go coax...
id b powering them with a jensen 400 watt 4 channel amp .:specs (http://www.dealtime.co.uk/xPF-Jensen_XA4100):.
im currently using the Alpine 9807 .:specs (http://www.epinions.com/pr-Car_Stereos_Changers_Alpine_CDA_9807_Radio_CD_MP3_ Player_CDA_9807/display_%7Efull_specs):.
any recommends would be appreciated...
any cable suggestions would be appreciated as well...
thanks!

i would hardly consider a 6x9 an upgrade from 5x7/6x8.....IMHO opinion 6x9 sound like poop... harmonics always seem to be off and they always tend to crackle under higher power...(coneflex) the 5x7 are slightly more round and suffer less flexing under power then the 6x9's....and if you say anything about bass then youre crazy...you dont buy 6x9's for bass....i quite honestly dont know why anyone buys them...you buy subs for base and round speakers for your other sound stages..
IF you want better sounding speakers go with round ones...6.5 or 5.25...that is the only way...and amplified they will sound a hundred times better then oblong speakers...
your rear speakers are seldom even heard up front when you have very nice front stage (components) and subs...my rears i can hardly notice at all...mind you when i shut them off ther eis a difference but not a great one..if anything there is just less "noise" in the car...
my suggestion is spend what you can on front speaker upgrade...figure out a way to run new wires to your doors and amplify the snot out of the fronts , with a good quality amp(Not a Jenson with an 83Db sig to noise ratio)..for your front or rear stage speakers you shoudl be using a considerably cleaner amp..try to find one that has a noise ratio about 10 DB higher then that...i can assure you you wont be hapy with that amp..you will get more crackle out of that then a honda can a fart canon..
Just my .o2
this amp would be considerably better for close to the same moneyJBL on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/JBL-P80-4-AMP-4-Channel-80-W-x-4-Looks-like-JBL-1200-1_W0QQitemZ5841019508QQcategoryZ4950QQrdZ1QQcmdZVi ewItem)
something liek this might work too..perhaps a bit of overkill.but it would look damn niceJBL amp on ebay..new (http://cgi.ebay.com/WORLDS-LARGEST-CAR-AMPLIFIER-JBL-GTI-6000-8-000W-RMS_W0QQitemZ5842627672QQcategoryZ18797QQrdZ1QQcmd ZViewItem)

Well... im kinda screwed in the rear since ive already got 6x9's installed and cut in... only reason they are there is b/c i had them in my old pontiac and when i blew the stock ones in the cougar i installed them
up front i have some decent infinity (non component) speakers driven with the stock wiring, model # escapes me but they were about 125$ for the pair on sale... in the trunk i have 2 JL 12W0-8's (bandpass) driven by a bazooka 300.1 amp
the jensen is already in my posession as it was just given to me by a friend...obviously there is better out there but was just seein what it COULD do for me
i do agree with you crazy that the rear speakers are seldom heard and do not do much for the system, but with one of them out and the other on its way out i thought maybe new 6x9's was the way to go...
maybe i should just gut the rear speakers all together and at some point get some components up front and as u say amp the snot out of them... or (since i work for a HVAC company) patch the cut in holes with some panning and then cut smaller holes in for more rounded speakers...
either way im running my setup with the fade set 100% up front b/c the drivers side rear is obnoxious and needs to be stabbed

with your fade all the way up doesnt this affect your sub outputs?
i am sure alpine doesnt do this but i know my crappy Panasonic does and it drives me nuts that i cant run fronts and subs..without disconnecting the rears..
you would have to use some seriously thick sheet metal to patch in the holes...otherwise they are going to vibrate like craz....wood would be better
