So I was coming home from work last night.. on the way back, I hit a nice, long, open stretch of freeway with no cars in front of me. Behind me, I see some asshole driving with their highbeams on in the fast lane. I'm leisurely doing the speed limit when he pulls up beside me in his 2nd gen Eclipse. He starts to inch ahead, then apparently the race gods decided to tell him to goad me into a little bit of an interstate speed contest.
He paces me for about 3 minutes before I decide, "Fine, asshole. Have some duratec powah."
I romp on the gas and he does the same, and while we're break even for the first couple of seconds, I start inching ahead further and further until I'm a few cars ahead by 117mph. He finally starts to back off and exits off the freeway while I coast down to the speed limit again.
Eclipse: 0
CougAH: 1
I was amused and surprised. I would've thought he'd at least have a decently quick car, but I guess the ATX on the freeway isn't really too much of a slouch anyway. ;)

Nicely done, Mike. Those automatics do fine out there on the top end, don't they?

...and it's ALWAYS sweet when THEY instigate it, and then get flogged.
I love it!

Yes Andy. I still think I'd have a good chance against you on the freeway ;) Especially w/ the headers, maybe, prolly just all in my head. I've taken a few 2nd gen eclipses on the freeway, the first one laughed at me. Wasn't laughing after i slowed back down to look at him, he wouldn't look at me at all.
Oh yea! Nice race NorCal More then likely not a gs-t or x, but it still shows those asses that an automatic cougar can stomp their precious *tuner* eclipse. Those guys get so cocky sometimes.

No, the engine refuses to die.
The tranny died and had to be replaced.
Can't believe it- motor went 70k+ without an oilchange, does fine. Tranny up and blows, though.

How did that motor last so long without an oil change?
Good kill

Hell if I know, dude. Although that was only about a year and a half worth of driving for me.. :)
I guess when they said "Duratec" stood for "durable" they meant it.

I used to have a black 95 eclipse RS 5 speed; in fact I wish I still did....
#1 reason IT WAS PAID FOR, I drove it over a hill in the rain to keep form hitting an accident that had already happened in a sharp curve, the driver at fault for that accident was drunk...
#2 reason on 115 MPH governor I had it out past 145 once (yes it was on a down hill) on flat land IT would run about 133-135
#3 reason when I bought my cougar I noticed that the teach went out to 8K and no red line so I figured it had a hell of a top end but couldn't test it out with my parents and sales man in the car. Needless to say latter that day after buying it cursing with my friend I found out it had a revlimiter much lower :-( and soon their after I was served the disappointment of finding out it had a governor at 115.
#4 all kinds of aftermarket goodies for the 420A Hahn racecraft for starters.
but my baby had like 140k miles on her the cougar had like 45K when I got her about 2.5 years agow now she is up to 112K
oh yea
P.S. the dealer that sold me the cougar really really screwed me.. 13,900 in 2003 for a 99 v6 non sport, with 45k I later found out that the book was about 9k for retail purchase. oh and my parents screwed me on the deal too they had me take their LEASED truck in as a trade on my car with like negative equity of like 3000, the eclipse had liability only insurance so I didn't get money for it but it was repairable but my parents didn't want to so I traded it in for 1500 bucks... and put a hell of a lot of money I had saved for college down on the car. So instead of getting to go to WVU I had to go to a local college :-( very bad decision I should have said **** a car I want go to WVU. I've spent quite a few weekends up their and would encourage anyone who wants to go to college and have a GREAT time to check it out...

No, but with the bit of oil that would burn off/leak from the failing oil filter seal from the last 7 months before its first oil change since 60k, I went through about a quart every other month. I just put whatever was handy in it. 0w20, 5w20, 5w30, 0w30, standard oil, synthetic blend, full synthetic, whatever.

That's what keeps me loving the automatic, as much as I'd like to have a 5 speed...she's still got some good top end on her. I feel ooooo so much better from a roll then I do a stop. (although I do love that rush when the irmc kicks in on first gear)

No joke! At roughly 10 hp per psi, and 170 hp stock, plus the 500... that's 50,670 hp!!! Then figure in all the room you've got for stickers, and you'd NEED a wing to hold it down! I bet the Air Force would be jealous of the HP your CAR makes compared to their best jet! Mwahahahahaaaa!!!!
