View Full Version : When should I change my ATX transmission filter?

I have a 1999 Cougar with the V6 and ATX and 77k miles. I have changed the transmission fluid twice since the car was new, but have never changed the transmission filter. I asked my mechanic about changing the filter, and he seemed reluctant because he didn't know how to access the old filter on the transmission.

Has anyone changed their ATX transmission filter? If so, where it is located on the transmission and how hard was it to change?

Sorry but the NEC ATX does not have a removable filter.

Napa holds tranny filters for the Cougar in stock. Why is there one for sale if it isn't removable?

I think there is a filter in the CD4E, Its just you need to disassemble the tranny to get to it. Our cars come with a plastic filter so they should last a really long time. If you want to service your Trans right, take it to the dealer and have them do a transmission flush.

pan ison the bottom of the tranny thekit comes with your filter and gasket if youhave never changedyour filter it is better of to not start doing it now 99% of the time it will start causing problems if it had been done before you should doit every 5 to 10k miles if i am wrong on the schedule someone chime in but beleive me with the tranny problems i have had i know there is a filter in them

Our trans filter is supposed to be good for the life of the trans. As hotcat pointed out, a filter change involves removing and disassembling the trans.

The transmission filter is not considered to be a "serviceable part", though it is available for when a shop does a rebuild, for example.

If you're going through the trouble to change the filter, you might as well just pull the tranny and do a full rebuild.

i think the interval for tranny flushes or fluid changes is 30k miles. I just had my tranny rebuilt not more than 8k ago, so ill wait out 25k before i decide on doing any flushing. But if you wanted to, you could add an inline filter into the tranny lines that run to and from the radiator.

And while you're at it, add an aftermarket tranny cooler instead of the stock one! :)
