Hi :)
I'm just curious... on the 27th, around 3:47pm - did Illinois experience an earthquake? it would have been small - only a 3.0... (2.0 and below you can't feel and 4.0+ is definitely noticable)
anything show up in the news papers / tv / news / radio?
I found this cool little program that tracks all earthquake activity on the planet and was just curious if it actually works ;)
...Just wondering - i'm sure it was too small to make the news... but I got curious since it says one actually happend right there!

Supposedly we had two earthquakes... the 3.something, and later a 2.something. However, both were in far southern IL, far away from most of us in Chicago area. So we never felt anything up here.
:) but its kinda cool to think we actually had an earthquake here... but kinda makes me wonder if the big Missouri one is coming...

yup phantoms right. There is a decent fault line in central IL [if I remember correctly], and I can remember 1 or 2 big news storys predicting a quake there [these are NOT new news storys].
I have always wanted to experience a earthquake. unfortuantely I doubt I will ever have the opportunity.

I remember about 3-4 in my life that i accualy felt over here in Missouri. and Dont think your lil illinios will stay cute and small ... from what ive learned mid-plate techtonics has the highest potential for massive quakes ... because the dont move as often but when they do it can go crazy.

who let the canuk in?
there was one in IN that I remember years ago. I was at my grandparents, now my partents house, and saw the coffee cups that she had hanging up start swinging. Very strange

oh I dont doubt there will eventually be one in IL [I'm looking forward to it]. Its not going to get anywhere near chicago, so I am sitting pretty where I am.

Actually, I don't have the exact numbers in front of me... but I read that of the top 10 most powerful earthquakes in the US... 3 of them were centered just south of St. Louis in Misourri... and 6 of the others were in alaska and maybe one was in california. and Doug is right... a mid-plate earthquake has the greatest potential... also from what I understand, the ground in the midwest is softer than that in California... so a 9.0 earthquake in southern MO will be felt by a much larger radius than in CA... it would be felt all the way in Chicago. Doug and I were talking about all this at Jason's house... how the last big one changed the track of the Mississippi river, and even caused it to flow backwards for a short period of time.

Found it... here's my source.
http://www.livescience.com/forcesofnature/050210_earthquake_arkansas.html
It was an article from LiveScience regarding a Midwestern Earthquake. Its got the map I mentioned showing how a earthquake in New Madrid would be felt over a much larger radius than an equal earthquake in California. Its also got the listing of top 10 earthquakes... I was wrong... it was 7 alaskan earthquakes, 2 in Missouri, and 1 in California.

Yep - I did a little searching around after what you said Reagan... it was more near St.Louis - but there WAS one there!
very cool. :)
i'm glad it was small though... as we've seen - earthquakes can be QUITE bad :cover:

Amazingly it took a Canadian to tell me that there was an earthquake where I live. It must have been quite mild becausee I didn't feel anything.

There was one here about 3 years a go that even made CNN. I think it was 6 something. New Madrid fault is in this area also. Apparently that fault is SUPPOSE to be bigger then the one in California.

Except that we have about 2 dozen fault-lines in California. ;)
You won't feel a 3.anything. You might feel a 4 or a 5. A 6 you would probably start to feel. The richter scale for earthquakes is exponential in nature, so a 6.1 is much stronger than a 6.0 and much much weaker than a 6.2.
