Ok, so I just got off the phone with Marty over at MSDS and ordered a new Xtreme coated Y-pipe to go with the Xtreme coated shorty headers that are sitting in my basement. Should be shipped out before they go on vacation.

Not sure how much time I'll have to try the install once it arrives, but...

For the Ohio NECOers with header experience, what tools do I need? Other than a copious supply of PB Blaster that is ;) I will be able to get Dad's compressor and I'll add whatever air tools I need. Lots o'extensions. What else?

If I actually get the nerve to do this prior to CF2005, anybody want to help?

If I'm around, I'll help! Air tools are the key, so you should be fine. All you really need air tools for is the bolts around the cat and y-pipe. The head bolts that hold the manifolds on are normally not so bad.

Air tools Andy??? I could barely get my hands up by the rear manifold bolts let alone an air rachet.
I'll give the same advice I gave Nemisis lots of rachet extensions!!!. I used a total of two feet of
extensions and a bendable socket joint to get some of those bolts on and off. And a rachet wrench as well.
If you can get to a lift that would make the job a million times easier. Good luck Mark!

Yeah, air tools on the bottom. Regular hand tools on the head studs. Sorry, I wasn't clear...

I sent my headers off to be recoated about 2 weeks ago. Marty just emailed me back ealier this week and said they should be shipping everything back to me next week. Doubt i'll install them though.

I'd help you out, Mark, but i've got way too much that needs to be done and i don't know if i'll get everything done by CF2K5. In fact i may have to go with a half finished, half gutted car. We'll see...

Lots of extensions, swivels, and universals. Spray the y-pipe bolts w/ pb blaster maybe the night before to let it soak. Other then that, patience my friend... i'm gonna have to take my headers off and do something w/ em.. Not gonna be fun, if i ever get a chance to not work and go home, it'd be an easy day, maybe two, project.

A small ( i think) 10mm cresent/closed end wrench for the front header bolts.

If you can get your hand in there, you can loosen 3 of the front header bolts reaching in from the top. It just saves some time and swearing instead of trying to get that extension and u-joint on those bolts.

I removed my front manifold very easily with what's called a "flex-head ratchet". It's a normal 3/8" drive ratchet whose head "nods". I would recommend one of those.

tools needed
LONG 3/8 extensions
3/8 universal joint
sockets and ratchet
LIFT!!!!!!
a fair amount of time......2 hours with a lift, lots more without

I would put lift as Optional... you dont need it, but it helps.

Dont forget to get a pair of vise grips or adjustable wrench or larger cresent wrenches to get your EGR off the rear manifold. There are also 2 or 3 small back rubber tubes that connect to the EGR tube on rear manifold (vacuum lines)

you can about double your time to do it on the ground.....

Well Jeff and I could prolly knock it out for you except...well, seems Ive lost my touch with cougars and dont wanna mess up yours too. Granted yours hasnt seen road salt...might be a fairly straight-forward job but I dunno. I guess since your a good guy and I like you I could help, but maybe as more of a "bench" player. Like, when the real workers get tired or frustrated I will come off the bench and spin a socket for a while until the starters are ready to get back into the game. I could be like uh...a consultant on um...things NOT to do.

Oh yeah- and I'm gealous and I hate you now :kick:

Let me know when Mark, if its a sunday/saturday I should be able to be there. And after doing mine, I think if we get everyone with any experience together we ll get it done really quick. But you have an ATX and I think I read thats way harder, but o well, Im game!!

Hey, my Energy Suspension motor mounts came from GForce today (they were on backorder - and NO FREE STUFF!!), so maybe we should have a pre-Fest MOD MEET?!?!
