Well with the new heat in my area my tranny is crapping out on me. All of a sudden first and third are grinding when shifted any faster than at grandma speed.

first only happens with a quick down shift, but third it pretty bad. does it all the time.

My question is, I've never changed the fluid in the tranny(mtx), it has 95,000miles on it, and I bought the car around 60k so I doubt it was changed ever.
What fluid should I use in it.......I read some stuff about the C ocktail (mobil and XL7(fords friction modifier)) but then I heard putting synthetic in a car with bad syncros will probably only make it worse. and that I should just go for regular old dino oil

So any recommendations on what to use, with or with out modifier?
I don't have the money to get this fixed now and the car just needs to last me until september....

Help please before I have no more third gear

ATX fluid and 1/4 bottle of friction mod.

will that stop the grinding or help it any? what's best for bad syncros? I thought fords modifier came in 4oz. bottles so shouldn't I use the full thing?and synthetic or regular dino oil???

I'm doing this monday so I need to know asap, I figured out how to get into third without noise, but it's a hassel, have to shift into neutral for about 2 sec, then can shift into 3rd.

It might help, but if the syncros are ate up, then an overhaul or replacement might be in order. Just put in regular fluid with a 1/4 bottle of friction mod and see if it helps.

heres my theory. i got a stock clutch with 80,000 miles on it and my tranny shifts fine when its cold or in cold weather, but when it gets hot the clutch gets all hot and the pressure plate bends instead of realeasing the clutch, thus not letting the tranny and syncros line up, thus CRUNCH. i have no more linearality left in the clutch. its like this while letting it out SLIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIPPPPPPPPP< GRAB!!!!!!!!!. its not smooth engagement anymore but still grabs good enough to chirp my stictacular tires in second. usually after ive stopped and got out of the car then get bck in and go to put in reverse or first and it wont go in at all. i have to move the car or f- with the clutch and stick till it goes into gear. it also kinda catches the syncros occasionally when it gets bad but i just put the clutch to the floor EVERY time i shift. it works better trust me. im gonna get a new cluthc when mine starts to not go into any gear or doesnt grab anymore. hope this helps.

well my clutch is in about the same condition as yours but add another 15k on that, it's great when cold, but sucks when hot. I changed the fuid yesterday and put in half the bottle of friction mod in(2oz). the feel is a lot better, and it's not grinding unles I try to shift really fast(i.e racing) so hopefully this will keep it going for a couple months until I can afford a new car or clutch.
