My Cougar is doing the sputtering, bucking and lurching when I let off the gas again. I have replaced the IAT sensor and cleaned the MAF assembly. Any ideas before it goes to the dealer tomorrow? It had a cel for code 1131-fuel/air metering last time it done this...but no code yet this time.

The maf meter will need to be replaced. It may not throw a code now, but it will.

ok....replaced the MAF sensor...reset the by taking the negative off the battery. Did ok...it seemed...but now the bucking isnt as bad...but the car is idling rough. The rpms jump by 2-300 and it still studders etc. Any ideas now? Bad sensor somewhere?

mine is doing the same thing, please tell me what you find. It has insanely horrible idle with ac on. Thinking maybe Idle Air Control Valve, or something to do with PCV system. If I rev mine in neutral I smell more gas than I should.

Check the rubber PCV hose between the transfer pipe (the metal line running under the ignition coil) to the connection into the intake manifold. If the rubber hose was really soft, almost like it was melting from the inside it may be collapsing when under high vacuum conditions (like when idling).

is this the hose youre talking about....

As you can see in the pic the hose looks like its loosing its shape there in the middle. It is also soft and squishy like you say. Is that the hose. My Cougar threw another cel today and I'm hoping thats it. Do you have a part # or name for it? Any knowledge of this is helpful! THANKS!
PS: Did you check yours NESS?

Theres a thread about in on FJ, I'll find it and post it in a while. I checked mine not too long ago, and it seemed fine, but if i remember right part isnt much so I might replace it anyways. At the same time as checking the hose I used a vacuum gauge to see whats going on. Seemed fine with everything except pcv system so I most likely will change hose and maybe valve again while I'm at it.
Also, me and my focus friend are planning on doing Cylinder Head install on the 9th. I really hope we can do it then (were both really busy) So Ill have Ford Racing Head, New Crower 2 Cams, and optimized tb. I'll let everyone know the results. I bring this up because I want to get this little crap worked out before I go for tuning.
Also, on an unrelated note, I had a problem for a while with my throttle sticking if if floored it and went to shift, tb would still be wot and engine would rev to 7k in neutral (not good!) I replaced cable and all is well, anyone else hear anything like this happen before?
Sorry for the longwinded post lol.
Congrats on the baby boy Scottina!

Only happens to me when I'm in cruise. If I pull it out of gear before hitting cancel or the breaks it seems to over rev to over 7k.

Yes, That's the hose. I'll have to look up the part number and get back to you.....but the dealer should have it in their computer system. You'll need to get the OEM hose because the two ends are different sizes....some thing like 1/2" on one end and 5/8" on the other. if the hose is soft and squishy...it's probably sort of tacky (melted) on the inside. When subjected to high manifold vacuum pressure....the hose collapses and if it's really sticky......it can remain collapsed for quite awhile before it springs back into its normal position. This can cause a bit of randomness which makes diagnosing the problem frustrating.....haha! Sort of like an intermittent electrical problem.

How much did that run you? I checked all the above and couldn't find a problem.

it was a new engine with less than 200 m iles on it...so Ford paid for it. I know the guy said the timing kit was $175+ valve cover gasket($25) + left top motor mount they broke...$86....then add whatever labor they charge.
