Well to sum it up...when I turn the key to start the car, it starts fine. However when the key rolls back after starting, sometimes it will shutoff if not in an exact position. When I remote start it, it starts fine. If I take the key out while its running it sounds like it wants to die then starts right back up. (Using Remote start)
My question is, how hard is it to change that cylinder? And how expensive is it? I thought I remembered fett mentioning that you'd need to get a new set of keys because of the programming:shrug:? Has anyone had to do this??
Thanks
I will check tomorrow...but I want to say that you can't get just an ignition cylinder for the Cougar, but you had to buy a whole key set. But I might be thinking of the door cylinders. I will double check tomorrow...I will also check about PATS. If I am not mistaken, you can change the cylinder out without effecting the PATS because the transceiver is a separate part.
Again I will double check tomorrow to be 100% sure...because I don't honestly remember.

Thank you. Much appreciated.
Ok, I looked it up today, and there is no listing for an ignition cylinder for the Cougar, Mystique, or Contour. The only way I can see to get the ignition cylinder is by buying an entire lock set. Which comes with new keys. Since the set comes with new keys, you need to have them programmed.
The list on the whole lock set was $160....and the biggest pain in the ass is that you need to replace all your locks. Both doors, ignition, and hatch. Or you could replace just the ignition, but you would need to use two keys for your car.

get a set off a junk car and install them, you can program those keys to your car, I just did a few weeks ago, got the set from a CEGer
How did you program them?

Well the PATS module is the same, right? So all you should need is to have your original key near the column when you start it and do the standard programming, right? I dunno. Maybe I'm talking out of my ass.
