That "$30 part" is the joint itself, not the entire lower control arm. The problem is that you'll have to have the existing joint drilled out of the LCA in order to bolt the new one in because it's riveted, not bolted, into place. If you have the tools, it's an easy job. You'll need to pop out the broken joint (hopefully you won't leave it in the hub), and remove both bushings from the subframe to remove the entire LCA. Grind, cut, or drill out the old joint and install your new one. Loc-Tite will be your friend in this job...

so basically it'd be a hell of a lot easier just to drop the $100 and bend over and take it?

$100 for parts and labor is not a bad price...

I used an air chisel to get the factory joint off the control arm. The job could have been done in two hours, but it took me about six hours total because i split the CV boot! :flushed:

$100 sounds fair for a $30 part and one hour of labor. If you can afford it, go that route.

thanx for the input guys. I just got a check from work about twice as much as I thought it was gonna be so I think I'll just take it in on Friday morning and forget about the hassle.

well, i got my car back finally from the shop. I noticed in my steering wheel shakes a little as I get into speeds of about 50mph+, but nothing like it used to. I need an alignment yet so I'm guessing thats whats causing that. they said the other ball joint was fine. so do u guys think after an alignment all will be well again?

to check if you need an alignment:

find a straight, level road. while moving, take hands off wheel for a few seconds. if car immediately dives for shoulder, you need an alignment. if car gradually drifts to shoulder, no need for alignment. chances are, you have uneven tread-wear on one or more tires.

if you're planning to get an alignment anyway, ask the shop if it will alleviate the complaint first.

speaking of uneven tire wear, my driver side front tire is almost rounded out. I'm guessing it's because of the bad ball joint, am I correct in thinking this? If I rotate my tires will it help any since my rear ones are fine?

It would be best to rotate your tires. You might even want to replace the one that is almost rounded out.
